Without really knowing anything about it, seems like a way to gain some attention while football is in peak season... anything to make shit more interesting for both fans and players while hopefully having the better teams meet more often seems like a good thing.

I think all these sports would benefit from shorter seasons and smaller playoff fields ... if you're interested primarily in the quality of the product delivered to the fans.
Of course, none of these leagues are interested in that, they're interested in getting the biggest TV contract they can get, regardless of how the quality of the product degrades.
