I can't quite tell who's at the top of the screen, but that's his target. He's looking at him and you can see the wide slot was designed to draw attention.
But the guy at the top of the screen, instead of coming back towards the LOS to maintain a throwing lane, drifts towards the middle and into the coverage. Poor zone awareness.
By the time he came off that receiver, he might have had the underneath throw to the WR on the chip. And was that Gray that was maybe settling?
But really, he probably should've fired it as soon as the guy at the top of the screen started to settle down for his cut. The slot underneath him had drawn the help and there's a window there to get some yardage.
Mahomes can't hold that ball on 3rd and 20. He just can't. Throw it on time or throw it away because you KNOW they're coming and the only thing that can really make this a ballgame again is a turnover deep in your own end.
