That one is one where I
think he's not sure if MVS is settling into the zone. MVS clearly was and created a really nice throwing lane, but as Mahomes is pulling the ball down he's still seeing MVS decelerating and perhaps not sure if they're on the same page.
Turns out they were. Mahomes just hadn't convinced himself of that fact so he tucked it. I suspect he immediately regretted the decision to hit the triangle button and pull down the passing icons there.
EDIT: I also wonder if he didn't lose track of where he was on the field and wasn't sure if he'd gone past the LOS. Hard to say. Definitely a strange looking play and as noted, not one we usually see.
Our sweet boy isn't playing his best football, for sure. He's looking decidedly average out there.
