I disagree with the notion that he sucked at hitting.
You can't look at him like a modern day 3B. The Mike Schmidt and George Brett generation changed the position forever.
When Mr. Impossible was playing, there was maybe two 3B in 70 years (Eddie Mathews, Ron Santo) that had the type of career slugging stats at the position that we are accustomed to now. He was a well above-average hitter for his position when you put it into context.
