Optimistic, indeed. As a Lions fan since like 1984, I'm not capable of having expectations like that. I think top 20 would be a more reasonable assessment, at least to start the year.
The biggest liabilities have been addressed, specifically the secondary whose best player was "overthrew the receiver". They upgraded both corners, and Joseph is really good at safety. Jerry Jacobs is serviceable until Moseley gets healthy.
The run defense was hit or miss, and the Carolina game was an anomaly during that final stretch. I trust the current LBs and DEs to handle their assignments, but the DTs are the biggest question marks right now.
Top 12-15 by the end of the year? Maybe. They were certainly trending upward with less talent last year. At this point I'm still like, "Just don't look like shit on national TV, and we can build from that", lol
