I think they did trade Tyreek with the thought of extending Chris in mind, but just 3 months later Aaron Donald threatened to retire and got a deal far and away from any DT in the league.
I am very confident Veach was forecasting having to pay $24-27 million APY before that happened and now Donald's deal has pushed Chris to want $30 million.
Things change. Trading Chris wouldn't be a failure by any means. In fact it could be a similar situation as last year. Veach shouldn't budge on this. You can't compromise a team for one DT who is about to turn 30. The contract has to have a safety valve to protect the cap.

I agree but the problem with this could be the snowball effect in that Veach probably already has an idea of what next offseason could look like. If he has to tag Jones for $30M+ that will take up a lot of spending until he is either signed or traded. Reason why I could see Veach trade jones before the season if he gets great compensation.
