Technically DT aren't "premium positions either. Edge Rushers are, but DTs are often included as they are a part of the "defensive line."
I feel that decisions have to be made when you have a talent heavy team. You simply can't pay everyone their market value as the salary cap won't allow it. If CJ's contract is going to reset the market, then sometimes you have to accept trading him to get as much value as possible.
CJ is not as young as he was and it could be likely that his performance drops off after year year... just as it could be likely that he keeps performing at a high level. At his position, time is working against him versus for him, but you know that.
