Considering if you did all the side quests at the end it's made more or less apparent through context clues that Clive survived. Clive remembering and mourning Joshua was enough to make the ending sad as ****. Didn't need the fake out death on top of it

Yeah I didn't like it either. The story is so dark and almost every main character in the game dies so I thought they would at least redeem it by having Clive and Jill and Torgal make it through and living happily ever after but Clive dies as well for some reason (or does he?!?).

After the Bahamut fight and the mother dying, the story really kind of grinded. I didn't feel like Barnabas/Odin or even really Ultima had their characters explained enough for me to care about them.

I expect there to be a FF16-2 if the sales are good for this game and maybe they'll finish the story. Otherwise the story was so open ended that the payoff really sucked.
