Cards don't have to pay him anyting else once traded...they just have to STILL count the Bonus's they spread out from that large lump sum they gave him at signing. So nothing goes into his pocket
He got a pretty good signing bonus when he signed his current contract. That Bonus was paid to Hopkins in a lump sum and the Cards are able to spread that bonus out over the life of the contract.
2023: $19.45M(Base salary and the most a trading team would pay him), $10.538(Prorated Bonus)...So you add them together and thats why the Cards have a $29.988M Cap hit this year.
The Cards will have $21M in dead money and only a $8.9M cap savings trading him because in 2024 his contract has another prorated bonus of $10,538M that no matter what the Cards at some point have to count as cap.
