When one of your main narratives is 'Breaking the cycle of Revenge and Hatred', you had better do your damn best to make sure the audience actually cares for the characters involved, and that's where Druckmann failed miserably for a lot of people. The only death that left any sort of impact is Joel's, and the way it was executed left such a sour taste that after that it's literally just wiping out cannon fodder alternatively from each respective group.

The ONLY meaningful side character introduced in this game is Lev. That's a far cry from the likes of Tess, Bill, Henry, Sam, and the Jackson community. Hell, even David is a much better antagonist than anything from this game. A lot of that has to do with lazily using tropes to garner sympathy instead of trying to give them even a semblance of a unique backstory.
