There's also a very real chance the relationship between Russ and Payton immediately sours. Judging by what Payton has said publicly, he's almost assuredly putting an offensive system in place similar to what Pete Carroll did for Russ in Seattle. We all know how that story ended.
Will the ownership leave Payton alone if the results aren't to their liking after the first season? They initially pivoted off Payton because of his insistence on full organizational control while the ownership preferred the coach and GM working as equals and reporting to them. If there's not immediate gratification I could see them trying to restructure the organization and Payton taking his ball and going home in response. He's already done it once before.
