They had the #3 pick to start with. The only subterfuge would be to try to get some other team to trade up to #1 or #2 for Patrick so they could be more likely to get Trubisky at #3.

I assume it was for smokescreen purposes. They probably hoped Mahomes would leak something at the time. This would have hidden their intentions with Trubisky. If I remember right, the Jets and others were pretty interested in Trubisky.
