I feel like that's just leftover dumb media narrative from decades ago when it seemed like players were actually trying to kill each other, rivalries were especially hyped up as blood feuds, and you sometimes had to question whether some players really did respect players of opposing teams.
They've taken so much of that hostility out of sports that yeah, making those comparisons today is just silly.
