Agreed, you really cannot compare eras, especially for QBs.
All anyone has to do is watch highlights before 1995 (just picking a date) and see how much the game has changed with protecting the QB.
Elway retired in the top 3 of most relevant QB stat categories... right up there with Marino, Tarkenton and a few others. Marino was a rarity by most accounts with the numbers he consistently put up there.
Now, go look at the QBs in the top 12 of most relevant QB categories and they're all guys that started playing when Elway and Marino retired. It's insane really when you look at the yards, TDs, etc.
Elway is ranked 6th in wins, behind Brady, Peyton, Favre, Brees and Roethlisberger.. so when he retired after the 1998 season - Elway ranked first all time in total regular season wins.
Passing TDs, he was 3rd only behind Marino and Tarkenton. Now, Elway ranks 13th all-time in passing TDs.
It's just silly to try and compare players from different eras, especially when you're talking 20 years ago and truly understanding how much the rules have changed.
