And knowing that he spent decades in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, why can't he speak Basic?
One aspect of this episode didn't necessarily
confirm
my earlier speculation but it didn't exactly negate it either, is the idea that Thrawn is behind the abduction of Grogu because he wants to create a Dark Force User in order to fulfill the role of the Emperor and take over the galaxy.
Maybe they ultimately go down the path of Jorus C'Baoth or maybe they use a different Jedi but I would be over the moon if ultimately, the Heir to the Empire series is repurposed in some form.
Filoni made some changes to Thrawn's backstory in Rebels and the latest Thrawn books by Timothy Zahn. The "bones" of the story certainly still exist and wouldn't upset or change the sequels (although I'd prefer they're wiped out completely but I don't know how realistic that is at this point in time).
But if that is where they're heading, they're going to have tens of millions of very happy Star Wars fans.
Spoiler!
Actually if you add more questions you can extend the universe to include such a backstory for prequels. Plus it would be badass to see him in full Mandalorian armor with the Dark Sabre when he takes off the helmet it is revealed it's Gorgu when you think it's an adult sized human
