I don't know, I was living overseas and didn't really get to watch the Chiefs until the mid to late 80's.
From what I remember being so young is that they thought he was a "thinking man's QB', a real smart player who could handle anything. He was winning a lot of awards and the Chiefs used that as a major reason for picking him.
