It’ll be nice to watch Mahomes and Watson go at it this weekend, but I think people who think that this is going to become a January norm are in for an unfortunate letdown.
Which brings me to this — I think it is extremely significant and positive that Mahomes seems to have learned how to just take what defenses are giving. It’s been noticeable to us all — he gets the ball out quicker against pressure this year finding his hot reads and what have ya. Sometimes it’s disappointing to a fan because we love the wow plays that come off script, but this style of ball is winning football that will extend Patrick’s career from being exposed to less hits. There’s a time and place for the special plays (primarily vs. a 3-4 man rush with gaps in the OL to escape through) and I still expect plenty, but when you know a blitz is coming, get that protection right or get that bitch out of your hands quick.
Back to my original point — Watson hasn’t figured this part out. In fact, it’s his greatest weakness. He doesn’t even seem to understand his protections that well, and he isn’t going to get the ball out in rhythm very often. Unfortunately, I don’t see him making it another 10+ years playing at a very high level if he doesn’t protect himself more. Add that to being under BOB, and we may not see many playoff matchups between these two after all.
