Chief motivator: Patrick Mahomes’ leadership grows as he guides his team with his voice
Quote:
Mahomes, though, spent most of last summer and camp deferring to the older veterans, letting them be vocal in setting the standard.
This year, the most demonstrative and authoritative player on offense during the practices open to reporters was Mahomes. He clapped his hands whenever his timing wasn’t correct with his receivers. He pointed at certain teammates in the huddle while giving out instructions before one of the many new plays designed by Reid.
“I see you, 12!” Mahomes yelled at Gehrig Dieter after the third-year receiver made a sliding catch between cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Daniel Sorensen during practice Tuesday.
Mahomes also showed his frustration last week when the revamped defense dominated long stretches of an open practice.
Mahomes kept testing rookie receiver Mecole Hardman with deep pass after deep pass. For Austin Reiter, the Chiefs’ new starting center, Mahomes has wanted to see which of them could shout out the correct pass protection call to the rest of the offensive line the fastest.
