Here's the thing.
An Amazon Echo only engages the microphone when you say "Alexa". The microphone is otherwise "off". It is listening but only for "Alexa". It doesn't send data any other time because I've put a Wireshark on it and watched the traffic.
If you believe it's listening to you at all times, then I might as well let you know that the only indication you have that 3rd party apps aren't using your phone's microphone is an indicator on the screen, which can of course, be spoofed.
Your phone is listening to you, just like Amazon is.
