Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes will play each other in the NFL next season. Here’s why that’s interesting.
It wouldn’t be the first time, either.

With Tyrod Taylor and Drew Stanton on the Cleveland Browns roster, No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield certainly has a shot to be the Browns’ starting quarterback come Week 1 next season.
And if not in Week 1, then maybe by Week 9.
During Mayfield’s first season in Cleveland, he’ll have an interesting game to play against Patrick Mahomes.
Spoiler!
Mayfield started his career in 2013 at Texas Tech as a walk-on. In the middle of his first season in Lubbock, he got injured. According to Mayfield, that’s when communication broke down between him and TTU head coach Kliff Kingsbury:
He said Texas Tech hadn’t offered him a scholarship for the spring semester, which was fairly wild given the season he’d had. FBS teams get 85 scholarships, and managing them is tough, but Mayfield was an above-average starting QB. Kingsbury has denied that Mayfield wouldn’t have gotten a spring scholarship.
Texas Tech has its own side of the story. The main thing is, Mayfield transferred under some weird circumstances. Freshman Mahomes eventually took Mayfield’s old job in 2014.
Things got a bit ugly between Mayfield and TTU after he transferred.
Mayfield even got kicked out of a Lubbock restaurant while the Sooners were in town in 2014, before he was eligible to suit up for OU:
The night before OU and Texas Tech played, he sat down for dinner at a Chimy’s restaurant. But, before he could finish his meal, he was approached by a restaurant worker and asked to leave.
Without putting up a fight, Mayfield exited the restaurant under a shower of boos.
“Besides eat my tacos and drink my water, I don’t think (I did anything to deserve it),” Mayfield said Tuesday, recalling the incident. “I didn’t want any trouble so I just walked happily out of there and went on.”
We’ll confidently assume Mahomes had nothing to do with the taco incident.
The last time these two guys met was in 2016, when Oklahoma played at Texas Tech.
“Everybody tried to talk about the ‘revenge’ or whatever, but that’s all way in the past,” Mayfield said before the game via the Dallas Daily News. “We talked about that last year. It is going to be a little different with the fan base. That’s the first time I’m going back there since playing there. That’ll be the different part. But, for me, it’s no different than playing any other Big 12 team.”
Oklahoma came away victorious, 66-59, with Mayfield besting his former team. Mayfield threw for 545 yards and seven touchdowns. Mahomes threw for 734 yards and five touchdowns. The game shattered records:
Oklahoma and Texas Tech gave us a good ole fashioned Big 12 shootout on Saturday night in Lubbock, with OU winning a 66-59 thriller that shattered record books, none bigger than the Division I record for yards in a single game. The teams combined to put up 1,708, just six yards shy of the 1,714 yards that stands as the all-time NCAA record (set by Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State in 2012).
Mayfield played Texas Tech again last season in Norman, after Mahomes had left. He didn’t hesitate to troll his former team:
Oklahoma won big that time.
While these two guys just missed each other at Texas Tech, seeing the air raid quarterbacks light it up on the NFL level should be fun.
What if Baker Mayfield never transferred?
