Definitely wasn't a money deal... he missed 6 games the last two seasons and all of preseason with a hamstring injury. They like the guys on the depth chart a great deal, so they made the cut and ate $1.2M dead cap vs the $4M and deal with uncertainty at injury.
It is what it is... time for the young guys to step up. Now, Ward is getting paid $5M for a year with the Bucs.
