Fair assessment.
The San Fran game reminded me of Mahomes' freshmen year when he made the starting lineup.
He wasn't ready then and he's not ready now.
The difference was that at Tech, he was the best QB to put in. That is not the case this year in Kansas City. I am not an Alex Smith hater nor supporter. Smith is what he is and my opinion is not going to change that.
What we saw in the San Fran game is that there are ten more players on the offensive side of the ball that are directly relevant to the QB's success and in that game, most of them failed. And just like at Tech, on the defensive side of the ball, there are eleven players that have a direct impact on the degree of urgency a QB must play with in order to win a game.
And given the (KC) defense's inability to wrap up and finish/secure a tackle on the running game, I'm fairly certain Mahomes called up his dad and said, "Hell, this is just like playing at Tech except the other guys are bigger and faster."
He'll get there. The question is, how far do you want him to go? If he is pressured to start this season, I think a large number of people are going to be disappointed. The ideal situation will be to redshirt him and give him as many snaps as possible with the first and second teams and look for any and all opportunities to put him for several consecutive series during the regular season game.
Then, come 2018. . . sit back, pop open a beer and enjoy.
Us Tech alums, we've seen this show before. It's a good one.
