Well it's a win win situation. Alex feels the pressure so he works harder and is better for it and Patrick sees that and works harder because he wants that job so is better for it.
I don't have a problem with Alex Smith being better the problem is if he reverts like he did in the playoffs.
So Alex job is to win games and stay healthy so that Patrick can learn it all in a year apposed to being thrust in the game if Alex Smith fails those things.
