There's always a choice. If the Chiefs felt this class was a bad as you say it is, they could have blown off drafting a QB like they did 4 times before.
But they didn't.
They identified premium talent, and struck a great deal to get him.
But more to the point, they had come to understand the undeniable truth about Alex Smith; a team, any team, will NEVER win a championship with Alex Smith. Ever.
So the long-needed change was finally made.
The Chiefs have selected their future, and Smith has no part in it.
