Personally, I don't think that's "smart".
He's entering his fourth season and if the Chiefs can't sign him to an extension in 2016, they'll exercise his fifth season option. If they can't extend him in 2017, he'll be Franchised in 2018, when he's 28 years old heading into the season.
Even if he's given the 5th year option and Franchised, he'll only earn about $27 million or so in the next three years.
But if he takes a deal like Johnson, he's locked up for 6 years, through age 31, with $36 million in guaranteed money and averaging about $11 million per with all of the contract incentives.
