People can try to characterize it that way, but what they're really saying is the world isn't the way I want it to be, so wipe the slate clean. You've certainly seen that over and over in our lifetime, this gleeful acceptance of every event as a presage to the end times, this crazy fascination with eschatology and apocalyptic prediction from the turn of the millennium until even now. It's very self-centered, I think, this 'bring on the end times!' philosophy, but that's human nature.
Personally I think this stuff is even crazier than the most woowoo of the ufo believers, but hey anything is possible.
