I would just start making him have a personal loan to you if you don't feel like you should fit the bill and hold him responsible for his actions. If he can't afford the fix now which I assume he can't, you'll pay for it and then he owes you a minimum amount of money each month until it's paid off. That's what my parents did to me in high school and college.
