In essence, the school is losing money on it's football team (not shocking).

They also have trouble getting people to come out to games because their stadium is -no exaggeration- falling apart and in a rough part of Birmingham.

There's support, however, to get a new stadium built but UAB is controlled by a state Board of Trustees, comprised mainly of 'bama backers. They kill any plans for UAB to improve their station as a football school and it is very likely they'll vote to end the program in the next few weeks. From what I've read on Reddit, the U of A board killed a relatively successful NCAA-sanctioned hockey team at University of Alabama - Hunstville for no good reason so there's precedent for the board to do such a thing.

EDIT: The Alabama Board of Trustees vetoed UAB's hiring of Jimbo Fisher as head coach in spite of the fact UAB boosters were going to put up $600,000 in Fisher's salary.
