TCU is extremely small for a D1 school (8k undergrad enrollment and about 4k grad enrollment). It would be hard for TCU to put up a consistently competitive program in the $EC.
Academics are also pretty big to a good portion of our boosters so $EC membership becomes a tough sell to them.
But, I could be swayed.

The Big 12's academics are no better than the SEC. West Virginia, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State... That's no better than Alabama, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss. The only really good school in the Big 12 is Texas, and they're about equal to Florida. Vanderbilt is the best of the bunch, and the SEC has more AAU schools.
Obviously the SEC and TCU would never even be a possibility for other reasons, but choosing to stay in the Big 12 over the SEC citing academic reasons would be absurd.
