They were 13 games above .500. They were still right behind Cleveland and the White Sox in the standings... but they'd just ripped off 14 wins in a row and had a legit shot at overtaking one if not both for their playoff spots.
Cone/Appier was a great 1-2 punch with Tom Gordon and Gubicza behind them. Hamelin was making an outside run at the team HR record, Joyner/Lind/Gagne/Gaetti was a very good defensive infield. Tons of speed in the OF with Vince Coleman and Brian McRae.
