There is not a 1st baseman around that wouldnt step on 1st before throwing the ball in that situation. He was damn near standing on 1st when he caught the ball.
A better throw to 2nd gets the Cards out of the inning. The only thing to question would be him choosing to throw to 2nd afterwards and not look at home.
