I am familiar with that situation. It sucks.
Poor girls. I hope my daughters don't end up being the "fat friend" some day. As unlikely as it is, my dream as a father is for my girls to not have low self-esteem. I referred to it as "unlikely" because it seems like the majority of girls I know have self-esteem issues to a certain degree. Hell, even I do...and I'm a dude....and my wife does. I DON'T want my girls to feel that way about themselves....every day I make sure that I inform them of how beautiful they are.
