Then we got the draft left. I know the Niners started Eric Reid last year, but not because they went in depending on him for production. They started him because they deemed he was worthy. And at least from how things are looking right now, about the only rookie I would feel halfway comfortable with starting at FS is Clinton-Dix.
Any other player is going to require a bit of luck. Not a lot, but some. We're simply just not very well prepared to fill this roster hole right now.

And while I agree with the bolded part, I think it's important to note that it wouldn't take much to upgrade Lewis. I agree that it's going to take a modicum of luck to get someone great on the cheap but I think letting the kids play is how we're going to have a chance in the future. I'd rather take a shot with someone we drafted and has some familiarity with the system than bring in someone else's player for a huge chunk of cash that we don't have.
Successful teams are successful because they hit on some late draft picks but in our case we either don't hit or they don't get a chance to play because apparently it is a very difficult process to rewrite a depth chart.
