HP 6500A Plus Printer Repair

This is an old printer however it has served me well over the years. One day, it simply would not feed the paper so in my finite wisdom, decided to take it apart and figure out what was wrong. I found a gear that was slipping on a shaft and used some JB Weld to fix it. Now, my problem is that the printer is out of sync. I removed the print head cleaning system to clean it and now the printer jams up and shuts down. It's amazing how much ink was in the pads inside. If you ever wondered where the ink goes when you clean the print head, I can tell you that it doesn't just disappear.

I have contacted HP and of course, they say it's too old and buy a new one. I am hoping someone has or knows someone that has a service manual or information on the proper position of the print head cleaning station.

I'm pretty handy and can usually fix things however I was having so much fun taking it apart that I neglected to take pictures. The rollers and print head are controlled by optical timing (disc and strip) however the cleaning station appears to be dependent upon an assembly position.

Tempted to just buy one that's broken and use it as a template for reassembling however who knows if the one I buy has been tinkered with.

Got a bit long here, I have watched various YouTube videos however none of them show where the park position of the cleaning station is.

Thanks in advance for any help...

CK

P.S. of course, the printer quit working immediately after I purchased new HP print cartridges.

Buy an Epson

Time for a new one. Unless you absolutely need to print in color... buy a laser jet. I've had mine (Samsung M2020) for 7 years now and I've replaced the toner just one time.

Anything with a cartridge is a scam right now.

That printer is 15+ years old.

Did the United States give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Yeah, it's old and outdated and a pos. However, so am I and I'm not ready to be put out to pasture just yet. Giving up just isn't something that's in my nature.

I'd check out YouTube for some videos or reddit. Might get lucky.

Since mine shit the bed the 3 times a year I need a printer, scanner or copier I just head over to the library with a couple quarters and get grab a beer on the way back for my efforts.

Yeah, I know. Just throw it in the dump with the rest of the old stuff. I guess I'll just toss the Defender, Joust and Tempest in there as well. My old Honda mower and Snapper rider are well past their lifetimes. Homelite chainsaws and Mercury inline outboards are also obsolete.

Too bad we live in a throw away society. I don't have the ability to fix surface mount electronics however almost everything else is salvageable and doesn't need to become eWaste.

Yeah, they all show how to glue the gear that I found yet none show what things look like when you take it apart carefully. I can still scan to computer and used it to fax my Medicare application. I was surprised the fax actually worked on telephone over IP.

Just another printer company that wants to sell you ink. If it comes with Windows software on a DVD, you bought the wrong printer.

This. Laser printers are so much cheaper long term. I have had two Brother laser printers. Won't use anything else.

Valiant effort to spare the environment. But have you stopped to consider that maybe modern tech is more efficient, making it better for the environment than the steam engines you're hoarding? :p

The main reason I am attempting to save it is that I have several new sets of ink cartridges that I spent a lot of money on. It's old, it's a dinosaur, yet it prints on both sides, scans and does faxes. After messing around with it for a while, I discovered that the printer has multiple timing strips, these strips are used by the printer to setup the position of all parts of the printer. When I first put it back together, I missed the sensor for the carriage position.

So, super glued the broken gear, cleaned up the ink pads and I'm back in business. The WIFI doesn't work because of changes made to how channels are handled so I just plugged it into my switch connected to the router and I can print from anywhere.

Now, why won't that old Honda tiller start?

Printers are such a PITA to deal with sometimes, lmao.

I've had a couple of lasers over the last I forget how many years/decades. Both were HP and I bought one toner cartridge for each. I think both were around $100 or so and were easy to retire and replace.
