Seems kinda like a semantics thing. Sounds like he's actually calling out respect, but doesn't want to sound like he's crowning the Chiefs as "this year" Superbowl Champions or something.

But sure, if it pisses people off go crazy with it.

"Defending Champion" is the correct/easy phrase to use.

Saying former before this game is saying the Chiefs have already lost the game according to the Buffalo players.
