Has a VERY strong Discovery look and feel to it. I really hope it's better than that.

Yuck. Only took a minute to identify the new Burnham. Hard pass.

It's a damned shame, too. This was Star Trek's opportunity to pull off their own Rogue One, but instead we get rizzed up Burnham.

I don't want to be negative before I've even seen it, but still, yeeesh.

The only good thing to come out of the Burnhamverse is SNW, and even that teeters at times.

I know the past is behind us, but I yearn for a DS9-type Section 31.

Sigh, it will never happen.

Not quite that, but still

Not trusting this one at all.

Traitor Eddington got what he was asking for.

This feels like the most un-Star Trek one yet.

DJ's left nut 12-10-2024 11:08 AM

Man - that looks bad.

I really enjoy SNW (about 80% of the time, at least) but can't say I'm a Star Trek universe guy. Never watched DSN and probably only saw about half of TOS or TNG.

But I'm not predisposed to disliking it. I typically give all of them a shot. But I can't imagine I'll stick with this at all.

BlackHelicopters 12-10-2024 11:19 AM

No way.

DJ's left nut 12-10-2024 11:53 AM

Strictly speaking, it's almost certainly racist, but ultimately I think asking foreign actors to emote and speak authoritatively in English just does them a disservice.

That actress is evidently quite accomplished so I'm sure she's good at her job. But you're asking her to carry a series in her second language. Moreover, culturally, the way she emotes and the way she uses language is just going to be different than what American ears would be accustomed to.

I just don't understand why a series would do that. I mean I get it, it's to establish "Humanity is a global thing now; it's beyond nations and now everything is on an interstellar/planetary scale..."

Okay, fine - but you still have an audience to reach. And just listening to her in that preview...man, it just doesn't work.

It's like having someone with a high pitched/nasal voice trying to do a baseball or football broadcast - it just rings wrong.

KC_Connection 12-10-2024 11:54 AM

Turns out this is a movie, not a series. So at least the time commitment isn't there from that perspective if it is bad (which it likely is).

DS9 started a bit slow, but after Worf joined the cast in Season 4 (and they got away from all the Bajoran religious crap) it went nuclear. Those last four seasons are IMO the best Star Trek seasons of all time, and also IMO Sisko is the best Star Trek captain.
