Question for you car mechanics out there

I have a 97' Ranger. It wont start all it does is make a "click" sound when I try starting it.

I don't have battery cables but I do have a battery reader and the battery was at 12.3 Volts.

Any idea what might be the issue? I'm thinking a starter.

starter or solenoid?

That's what I'm thinking. Is 12.3V decent?

Solenoid is easy to check.

How to Bypass the Starter Solenoid
Locate the starter motor under the vehicle. ...
Locate the two metal contacts on the back of the starter solenoid. ...
Place the metal blade of an insulated screwdriver across both metal contacts. ...
Get a friend to help you by turning on the ignition with the key.

Try giving it a jump start first. Easiest thing to do before you do anything else. Neighbor/friend have any? $10 for a set at harbor freight and they come in handy when needed.

12.3 volts during cranking? I'm thinking your battery reader would give cranking amps? I recall a battery I had before was reading 12V but was still a bad battery due to low cranking amps.

Clean terminals or connection at starter.

If you're lucky it will be due to something in the ignition ;)
