OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A significant injury accident has closed lanes on eastbound I-435 and portions of westbound I-435 west of Antioch. Kansas Highway Patrol says, at this time, they believe there are two semis and two passenger vehicles involved.

Johnson County MedAct reports that there is one person injured critically and another with a minor injury.

A FOX 4 viewer sent these photos of the crash scene.

The Overland Park Fire Department says that this will create traffic stand stills and drivers needs to find other routes. The fire department says the lane closures will linger for hours.

A witness FOX 4 spoke with said he was driving by on the other side of the highway when he saw the crash. This witness said as he drove by, there was a loud explosion and he immediately felt the heat from that explosion, then he heard and felt three more explosions – and say a massive fire ball go into the air.

He believes the cars and trucks on the car carrier may have been exploding.

Frazod 07-17-2017 05:53 PM

Didn't this just happen like a week ago?

Bugeater 07-17-2017 06:14 PM

Not sure how anyone could have survived that. And I can't think of a worse hell than being trapped in a burning car.

No, it was today.

Edit: I see what you were thinking of, in light of the other posters commenting. The semi out on the KS Turnpike.

That's about a mile from where I work. I dread that drive every night. I have a 90 minute commute (45 mins AM, 45 mins PM) mostly on I-35 and I-70, but sometimes I go US 69 and I-435 if I have to deliver jobs to clients. Glad I was going north on I-35 tonight. Most of the idiots I see are kids on bullet bikes, and impatient tail gaiters/lane hoppers trying to pick their way through stop and go traffic doing 70mph. Surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Dartgod 07-17-2017 07:33 PM

Well, that's probably going to **** up my drive to work tomorrow. I would not be surprised if the highway is still closed tomorrow morning.
