I did it! I did it!

For 12 years, I've had a mission. I've had a goal. I've had an aspiration. Check out this thread from 2007 to see documentation of my effort: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showt...ay#post3914033

We built our garage in 2000. It's in an alley, so you have to make a 90 degree turn to get into it, and you have to go up a short driveway of about five feet that's got a significant uphill slope.

I've been trying to coast into my spot ever since we built the garage, but it's never happened. The garage door has to be up with enough time and the speed has to be just right to get up the slope. With the range of the opener, the slope of the alley, slope of the driveway, and the tight turn at the end, it's like planning the re-entry of Apollo 11 without a slide rule.

Well, today it happened. I'm beaming with pride. After 12 years of effort, today it happened.

The wife and I were driving home from dinner. As we drove up the alley, I hit the garage door opener and immediately thought, "Nope, way too early." But perhaps it was the perfect combination of heat and humidity, but the garage picked it up. I caught a glimpse of it moving up ahead, where it's barely visible above a neighbor's fence, and my heartbeat quickened. I've never gotten that range out of the opener before.

I let off the gas and put it in neutral, and instantly thought that I wasn't going fast enough. But maybe it was the new tires I put on last month, or maybe it was the hand of God pushing us, because we kept rolling good. I started making little chipmunk noises and my wife, knowing my quest, picked up what was happening. She sat as still as possible to ease my concentration.

We rolled up to the critical turn and driveway slope and the car had maintained its speed spectacularly. The garage door was already at mid-windshield level and at that point I knew I had it. Swift left turn, easy roll up the driveway, and I planted the car perfectly into its spot from a starting point about one-third of a block away. It was a perfect ten. It wasn't even close.

Today may be the best day of my life.

First things first. The book, the tour, and then I start listening to movie offers. I don't want to get ahead of myself.
