NFL moves touchbacks to the 35-yard line

Seems like this was overshadowed by the OT rules and the tush push but this might have a bigger impact than any other rule change. Clearly trying hard to create more kickoff returns.

Quote:

NFL ownership voted on Tuesday at the Annual League Meeting to continue to utilize the dynamic kickoff, while moving the ball spot on touchbacks from the 30-yard line to the 35-yard line for kicks sent into the end zone, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported.

The league debuted the dynamic kickoff on a one-year trial for the 2024 season with the goal of injecting life into what had essentially become a ceremonial play while also preserving player health and safety. The results in 2024 were a success. The league saw 332 more kickoff returns, bumping the previous 21.8% return rate up to 32.8%. There were also 59 big-play returns (returns of 40 or more yards) last season, which was the highest figure since 2016.

now that they are tracking the ball, coffin corner kick offs inside the three should stand :thumb:

sounds gay AF

Having a strong-legged kicker is going to be a must. You really only need 25 yards for a shot at a fg.

Glad we have butker

HemiEd 04-02-2025 05:19 AM

Damn, that is just crazy, but it makes sense why they are doing it. Just about up to the 40 where kicking out of bounds gets you.

PatMahomesIsGod 04-02-2025 07:01 AM

NFL: Player safety is a priority!

Also NFL: Moar kickoff returns and a longer season!!

TEX 04-02-2025 07:17 AM

The STUPID USFL- type rule just got more STUPID.

wazu 04-02-2025 07:20 AM

Yeah this seems significant. Teams are going to need to get really good at executing both sides of this play.

Didn’t the dynamic kickoff reduce injury rates?

Not that the NFL a gives a shit about player safety anyway.. but this doesn’t seem too crazy to me.

displacedinMN 04-02-2025 07:48 AM

butker will have to kick off from the 10

SHOWTIME 04-02-2025 08:03 AM

So basically 2 first downs and FG range.

If the NFL wants more kickoffs, why don’t they just move the kicker back?

Like… is that too logical for them or something?

philfree 04-02-2025 12:54 PM

The constant changes are annoying and these KO rules are just stupid. The game sells itself despite these super rich idiots trying their hardest to screw it up.

This common sense will not be tolerated.

Eh let’s be real. The kicker has evolved to a position so good that they’ve made kicking super boring. Kickoffs are unwatchable right now. If this encourages more returns I’m good with it. This actually seems well thought out unlike a lot of shiny object changes where they pushed for player safety first, then considered an approach that might encourage more returns.

Changes that are made because the game has evolved are good. Same reason moving the xp back helped make them just a little more exciting.

The rules changes have made KOs boring. Just move the KO spot back so they can't kick it through the endzone and there will be exciting KOs. Make them have to handle the ball when it crosses into the endzone like it used to be. They've been all over the place with this and there ideas are hokey. It's annoying.

scho63 04-02-2025 01:22 PM

Why don't we just stop kickoffs, put the ball on the oppositions 20 yard line and see how much we can score in a game. Is that what Goodall really wants?

Chiefs 146 Bengals 127

Easy 6 04-02-2025 02:41 PM

Its not broke, but they just keep trying to fix it anyway

Garcia Bronco 04-02-2025 05:55 PM

They should call it the Gen Z line.

The Giants get the touch back and line up for the field goal.

T-post Tom 04-02-2025 06:10 PM

Dose the kicker with ayahuasca every 15 minutes. That should spice up kickoffs. https://milwaukeerecord.com/wp-conte...odgersdumb.jpg

MahomesMagic 04-02-2025 06:18 PM

I'll take any extra help our offense can get.

Deberg_1990 04-02-2025 06:36 PM

Even 50 yard FGs have become fairly Ho Hom these days. Kickers have become too good and the fields are all perfect now. No more multi purpose fields like Oakland

Chief Pagan 04-02-2025 06:45 PM

Just kill, kill the freaking kickoff and be done with it.
