Wichita gets the three peat! Worst allergy city
Wichita was named the worst U.S. city to live in for allergy sufferers for the third year in a row, with the data showing the city scored worse than average on all three assessed metrics. The Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America named Wichita the allergy capital once again this year, taking into account pollen levels, medicine use and allergy specialists in the area. The average score sat at 67.57, while Wichita scored a 100 — 14 points less than the city in the No. 2 spot, New Orleans with a score of 86.81.

Congratulations to our Wichita people!
|
Thankfully we won't see any allergy commercials on TV to tell us what allergy pills to buy!!!!
|
Well, that's nothing to sneeze at.

Wichoo!

What's the deal with people on CP saying this about every city? 1) From what I've seen, KC is pretty shit hole-ish itself. 2) Every city has bad areas and good areas. |
This was the perfect thread to use the WSU icon.
Too bad |

One of the things I take great comfort in knowing is that if thermonuclear war were ever to happen... Wichita would be one of the first places to get got courtesy of the aircraft industry there. While I don't wish for thermonuclear war... knowing I would get to watch Wichita be incinerated and uninhabitable is of great comfort. |
I find it hard to believe that (name your town in Georgia) would not secure the "Worst Allergy City" award year after year.

How big do you think that initial salvo would be? If Russia or China, it would be hundreds....not really anywhere would be safe |

If China launches and hits KC with their Dong-Feng 5 ICBM... the fallout would reach out almost to Kearney but not Excelsior Springs. I'm past both those so I would probably be ok, at first. Same thing with the Russian Topol (SS-25)... wouldn't reach me where I live. While I would probably die from fallout anyway... I wouldn't die before getting to watch Wichita burn. |

This thread is funny because I almost made it a few days ago. We lived there for 23 years and my wife's allergies are much worse here in the Ozarks than they ever were in Wichita. Something about a bazillion cedar trees. |
Wichita is Topeka's big cousin
|
My only experience with Wichita is from driving through and seeing the gas station and restaurant that is between I-35 when driving south towards it. As a kid I thought it was amazing to be exiting on the left side of the highway.
|
Wichita is okay. It's just kind of boring for twenty-something recent grads.
We just drank and Pump House and went to the casino |

El Paso sits at the base of the Franklin Mountain range, cold air comes in off the mountains then hits El Paso where it warms up, rising and picking up trash in the process. So my first impression of El Paso was seeing a swirling cloud of trash floating above the city. |
I prefer to be positive, but if you ever have driven into Liberal, Kansas south bound on Hwy 54 there is no way to spin it as a positive. I large hill of junk cars, followed by packing plants and trailer parks. Makes a person feel good about where you live.

No surprise since it's the home of Clint the Wichita Cuck

When the wind is blowing from the right (wrong?) direction all you can smell is that meat packing plant and it smells horrendous. Then I was there for a dust storm that lasted, like, three ****ing days. It was like a brown fog, visibility was maybe 100 ft and the second you stepped outside you got dirt all over, in your nose, ears, eyes, hair, clothes. It's a good place to drive through and continue driving. |
I hadn’t considered it but I was there this week and my allergies are fired up a little bit
Probably didn’t help driving through when they were burning a billion acres of prairie |

I bought several "junk cars" from the area and don't remember seeing any trailer parks but no doubt they were there. 69 Barracuda formula S, 340 pink Duster and a 58 2 door hardtop Belvedere. :D Unless something has changed the packing plants used to be around Garden City. Holy crap the smell while playing golf there! |

I will say that while most of my Army bros absolutely hated the place I had a pretty good time when off post and away from the training environment. It was even reasonably safe to hop over the boarder into Juarez, but from what I've read that's no longer the case. |

Yeah, the demos and business I was doing was for "maquiadoras" (sp) companies that had locations on both sides of the border. Thompson telivisione was one making tvs on the same assembly line for several big names. Quite an operation as were several. We are talking around close to 30 years ago now so a lot has probably changed. |

I don't think I'd ever want to live within 50 miles of the border, other than maybe - MAYBE - San Diego. |

There was a salvage yard in Gallup that was incredible with a bat shit crazy owner. He had a Snapon tool box collection that was shocking. Every room in this house was full of Snapon tool boxes, no way anyone could live in it, no room. Put the money down on a 340 Duster and when I went back to get it, he had sold it to someone else saying I took too long. |

Played at several courses around San Diego, they were great as well. But yeah, you are right there at the border and that could be a real issue. **edit** Your stolen car newspaper comment reminds me of when we were stationed in Rhode Island. They had no titles to cars and the stolen car reports were a regular on the radio. |

I lived in Olathe and I’ve lived in Wichita. Comparing a metro with 2.5 million people to one with 650k is asinine. Both metros have their pros and cons. Someone said it earlier, if your a single, 20 something living in Wichita, your entertainment options, that are conducive to your young interests, are limited. If you’re a family starting out, want affordable living and family oriented activities, Wichita for its size is pretty accommodating. Wichita now, is not the Wichita of the late 80s and 90s.
Both places have their $hit-hole areas. You’re lying to yourself if you believe KC is immune and free of societal riff-raff and degenerate hotspots. I reside in Wichita and enjoyed my time in Olathe. If I were to move to a bigger city, KC would be it. I refer to it as a small ‘big city’. KC still has Midwest values and charm. Can’t we all just get along? |

Both won't go back now as they agree it has changed and not for the better. Like anything though, it is probably what you make of it. I heard there is tremendous amount of homeless, like a lot of metro areas. Sad. |
I like looking at houses on realtor.com, and I must admit to being intrigued by the impossibly low housing prices in places like Wichita and Hutchinson. That would be an easy way to free up home equity and put it into income-producing investments in retirement. But I have no idea what it's like to live in Wichita or Hutchinson, and I fear that there might be humidity.
Seriously, though, look at this. It needs some updates, but I could live in a house like this, and it's for sale for $49 per square foot. Prices in my neighborhood in Denver are $400 to $500 per square foot. https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...=srp-list-card |

Hutch isn't far from Wichita. You might not enjoy the wind though. Prairie Dunes golf course used to always be rated in the top 20 nationwide, not sure if it is true anymore. Played it a few times. $400 to $500 per sq ft is crazy. |
Quote:
We've basically been within 3,000 people of 40,000 total since like the 60's. I think there is a law that says when someone moves to Hutch, somebody else has to move out or die. PD is ranked anywhere from #12 - #16 in the country and top 50ish in the world. It's a great course. |
Quote:
Yeah, PD is absolutely a beautiful and challenging course. First time I played it was about my 3rd year playing golf and I finally said **** and quit keeping score. Last time we played it I played pretty well. You would know Rose Motor Supply? That place was amazing back the 80s, they had everything, at least two of them. I used to sell them a few lines of auto parts and truly enjoyed calling on "Babe Rose" who probably passed away a long time ago. |
