Taco Travesty

It is with great sadness that I must report the best taco shells ever, are no longer available. Anyone else sad about this?

Damn, white people taco night is canceled!!!

LoneWolf 03-12-2025 10:45 AM

If they're so good, why are they going out of business?

DJ's left nut 03-12-2025 10:48 AM

SONOFABITCH!

AndChiefs 03-12-2025 10:50 AM

Why would you use a taco shell when you can use a tortilla?

ROYC75 03-12-2025 10:51 AM

We started eating them when we lived in the KC area. Surprisingly we found them here in Ky (1989)since the store here were stocked with Associated Groceries from KCK.
I have that they were getting hard to find. Going to miss that thin shell!

Pitt Gorilla 03-12-2025 10:53 AM

Oh no! Those were my go-to.

DJ's left nut 03-12-2025 10:53 AM

The white corn ones were thinner and better but they've been really hard to find since around COVID.

You had to be willing to tolerate a few dead soldiers but it was worth it.

Rainbarrel 03-12-2025 10:53 AM

No shell, no lettuce, no bueno

99.9% of the time I agree with you but I enjoy the occasional homemade double decker taco

Frazod 03-12-2025 10:57 AM

I'm sure some enterprising scumbags will still offer them for sale on eBay at $100 a box.

They had to wait one more day to release the news

i never could get into corn tortillas, and i generally like to go traditional when i make mexican/italian food, so i’ve tried them so many times even tho I’m always like eh. I’d like to try making them from scratch and seeing if that makes a difference. Hard to justify buying the specific tools needed for that tho when im not even sure if i’m gonna like em still LMAO

Would be unwise to buy them. They get that rancid smell and go stale pretty quickly.

Which is usually a good sign. There's a reason those Taco Bell shells last forever and it ain't the quality of the ingredients.

Mosbonian 03-12-2025 11:01 AM

Does that mean we have to resort to Old El Paso?

Yeah, nothing else quite like them. Very light and low calories compared to others.

So far it looks like that or Taco Bell shells are on the shelves. Heavy and loaded with preservatives to deal with Walmart logistics. :(

Smed1065 03-12-2025 11:10 AM

Just checked and it is 36 left. The air fryers works wonders on shells and chips..

I have really enjoyed them for the last few years and it sucks. Been keeping two 36 packs in stock. Used the last of them last night when my daughter and her family was here for Taco Tuesday.

Once I heard this news I made a quick run to town to buy up what was left but was too late, all gone.

srvy 03-12-2025 12:13 PM

My son was disappointed by the news that they closed permanently. I wasn't as big a fan but when Perez shut it down they left me no choice. All the other hard shells on the grocery shelves suck. Arts is as far as I know still going strong just hard to find. I tried the Aldi brand last week and Son was fine with those so it's our go to.

Spanish Gardens had a fire at the taco house in the Argentine District. The owner is committed to rebuilding. The distribution center is in another location and the sauce and seasoning is still on the shelves.

We like the white shells the best. Luckily we could easily find them here. Tacos not gonna be the same soon! 🙁

This sucks. I had to get another brand last week and they were awful, no more homemade Tacos for me. Perez Corn Tortillas are gone as well.

Never seen that brand around here, sounds like they're quite popular

When I'm doing American style tacos, I prefer the stand and stuff style from Old El Paso... you can really load' em up and they're so much easier to plate without half your toppings falling out

Oh my, so sorry you missed them. If you like Old El Paso, you would have loved these most likely. Night and day difference. Melt in your mouth.

srvy 03-12-2025 04:00 PM

As far as I know they only made corn tortilla shells and taco seasoning. They were on 69th street east of N Oak in Gladstone Mo. It was in the old Guys Foods bldg before they went to larger digs in Liberty Mo.

Anyone who I knew who worked there didn't stay long and said the owner treated everyone like trash. After Covid, he really struggled to keep employees.

Growing up we just bought the corn tortillas made by Spanish Gardens. We fried then up in a pan of oil with taco shell tongs.

Frazod 03-12-2025 04:09 PM

I've never looked into it, but it can't be that hard to make tortillas. And ones you make yourself would probably taste much better than the crap available in grocery stores.

ptlyon 03-12-2025 04:10 PM

Speaking of guy's, whatever happened to them?

That is interesting, hadn't heard that. The owner being an ass kind of softens the blow.

It's kind of funny, I stumbled upon a FB group dedicated to bringing them back. :D

Lots of conversation about them on there and on Reddit, but I don't want to bring that over here.

Lots of great tortillas available but they have a shit ton of calories.

ChiliConCarnage 03-12-2025 04:54 PM

If it's popular enough maybe somebody will buy it and start making them again. 3000 more posts and..

In 61 years of life, I have never purchased a single taco shell. Tortillas once, taco shells never.

Never made a Mexican dish except a cold 5 bean salad that has Mexican flavors.

Never my thing. I know people go crazy for Mexican food.

Do it. Use something like this:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qXQDZaD0zfg?si=y3cH3SiZR4oRwRV7" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

Their website says 25 bucks for two of them. Fry them in lard.
