The system is moving out of the Pacific so there's no real accurate data just yet.

While the current European model has us getting clobbered, the American model has the worst of it just to our east.

DrunkBassGuitar 01-01-2025 09:57 PM

A lack of accurate data isn't stopping the apple weather app from predicting 16-20" of snow on Sunday in KC lol

I'm guessing it just goes with the biggest outlier EURO model and yolos

htismaqe 01-02-2025 11:47 AM

We are getting a bunch of snow right now.

While I make fun of people who lose their shit and spend 500 dollars at the store, even the Euro model has us getting hammered, we're gonna get significant snow.

There is some kind of Bermuda Triangle blind spot within the models when it comes to predicting snow for KC. My entire life the vast majority of these have turned out to be nothing. I'm not somebody who thinks all the meteorologists are always wrong or anything like that. It's just something weird with KC and snow.

So once again, I hope they're right. Would make for some fun atmosphere as I grab a bag of popcorn and watch the rest of the NFL play for the playoff lives.

It's not the snow we're concerned about. It's the ice that is being projected. Too much ice on the power lines, with snow on top of it...... yeah that'll go well.

If that happens, you’re going to have widespread power outages. We got hit with one of those about 20 years ago and some were without power for 3+ weeks. I was in MO for Christmas when it hit and driving back down to it was astonishing. Just south of Ft. Smith on down, it looked like the Tunguska event.

January, 2001. We went 11 days w/o power. My father-in-law lived a block or so away and he never lost power. So we stayed with him in his "thermostat set to 90 ****ing degrees" duplex for the majority of the time.

Yup.

I believe 12/7/05. On Thanksgiving I dropped the family off at KCI to go home to Germany for the holidays. Sweated my ass off with the luggage. The plan was I would join them ~12/15/05.

Sh*t got real 12/8. I live in the last house in KS at NE border north of Hiawatha. Anything happens, I lose power.

~1/2" of ice. That morning it sounded like WW3. "Bombs" going off as 12" tree limbs started raining down. As I was looking at my barn in the driveway, then moved forward 5 steps, I heard a loud "crack" and a "thud". I looked over my shoulder and saw a ~16" maple tree limb laying behind me, where I had just been standing.

My tree wind break had been culled. Thank goodness I had just bought a small 8N Ford tractor weeks before to move all the downed trees and limbs.

Days later, driving over downed power lines, going to Hiawatha, all the power poles looked like dominoes laid out.

Again, Providence, besides the 8N tractor, I had a compliance meeting the day before.
My generator died. I called the compliance woman, who was in Omaha, if she could pick up a generator for me as she came down to Hiawatha. There was none available in St Joe/KC/Topeka. She got the last one at HD. Additionally, Providence, her rental car was a SUV:)

I was without power for +3 weeks. Keep in mind, my water is from a well that runs on electricity.

Thank goodness the wife and kids were not home!

Edit: So today, I am going to finish hooking up my generator to my propane tank and make sure my tractor still runs....

They’ve done serious forecast revisions here and I think I’m in the clear. I mean, there are at least 15 trees that could smash my house, but I don’t feel it’s likely this week.

PSA to all livestock owners ahead of the snow/ice storm and extreme cold coming in. If you lose any livestock due to the weather PLEASE take a date stamped picture (Snapchat has filters that can help with this) and notify your local FSA office of the loss.
The Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) provides benefits to producers who lose livestock above normal mortality to things such as extreme weather events.

Learn more about the program here: https://www.fsa.usda.gov/sites/defau...ock_3_2024.pdf

All y'all down there good luck and be safe. Bookmark the upcoming posts from you guys to go back to in December when they say 2025 is the warmest in record (globally).

Seeing they are putting that brine shit down. Have fun with that. Works well for snow and ice if it stays about freezing. Problem is, you won't. The snow and ice hits it and it helps melt it. Then, when it turns bitter cold to temperatures it doesn't work anymore, it turns to ice. Then snow piles on it. So you have a layer of ice with snow on it and the plows blow that shit everywhere. Busted the taillights out on my truck one time from the frozen snow and ice thrown on it.

Hopefully power will stay on for you. Good luck everyone.

DrunkBassGuitar 01-04-2025 09:44 AM

NWS downgraded the ice in Joco to less than .10 inches which is good and that's for the whole county. I'm up near the Wyco Joco border so I'm hoping for no ice. Getting prepared to potentially lose power anyway.

My wife starts a new (night shift) job Monday night, hoping the roads (they're all big well traveled roads on snow routes) are better then but ti's going to be coooold.

My other worry is freezing pipes. Everything in my house except for the pipes to my shower and washing machine are pex, which does expand. I've never had an issue with freezing before even when it's gotten colder out and that was before replacement this year. Going to keep water dripping in the shower and a space heater by the connection in the washing machine (they opened the wall when they did my plumbing so I could do just that). It's just that if we lose power I have to go into my crawlspace to shut the water off to the house and I hate the crawl space because it looks like the basement in the house from the blair witch project.

Good luck everyone, hopefully this is the worst it gets this winter, we always get one **** ass shitstorm every january it seems.

Hopefully the cold af temps means the roads will freeze dry overnight after the storm has passed. Might take a couple of days, though.

All of the ice totals are going down unless you're further south like the Ozarks is looking at a full on ice storm. But less ice does mean more snow.

Good work. Those things are so simple it's almost impossible for it to malfunction.

Maybe grab a backup regulator when you are in the store next time.

EDIT: ALL THE FOLLOWING IS FOR NATURAL GAS AND PROPANE HEATERS NOT KEROSENE!!!!

Propane heater regulators can stop the flow of gas on the smaller emitters:

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/s...YZ60kgxs5L8tgg

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/s...SBKtapkR9l4dyp

On bigger units the pilot light heat probe (thermocoupler) can be a problem. Get a handheld blowtorch and heat it up 5-10 seconds before opening the gas valve and lighting the pilot light.

I keep an extra termocoupler around for our house natty gas floor heater and a regulator hose for the portable in case the shop one acts up when the electricity goes out.

Good work. Those things are so simple it's almost impossible for it to malfunction.

Maybe grab a backup regulator when you are in the store next time.

I appreciate the advice. It's been over 40 years since I've been around a kerosene heater. We used to have a couple when I was a teen back in the early to mid 80s.

Kerosene is different, I don't know a lot about them.

Hopefully I didn't lead you astray!

I'm an idiot, completely misread KCLee and RClarks posts.

I'll leave the info up in case a dumbass like me 20 years ago needs to learn about this stuff.

If you are out and about, might be a good idea to slightly overinflate your car tires before the shit hits.

Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector
