Why hasn’t Reid won more coach of the year honors?

I think he hasn’t won since 2002. What’s up with that? Anyone know?

BWillie 07-12-2024 06:34 PM

Too fat.

EricBerryismyBae 07-12-2024 06:36 PM

Same reason Belichick only won three. It’s more of a biggest surprise/overachiever award.

staylor26 07-12-2024 06:39 PM

COTY is essentially the "who's team did way better than anybody expected?" award.

493rd 07-12-2024 07:01 PM

Because the NFL assumes Reid will always field good teams. Thus, he’s overlooked. Oh well, Andy has a heavy hand.

kysirsoze 07-12-2024 07:08 PM

They really need CotY and a different award for biggest turn around or something similar.

Yep.

Key phrase is "of the year." When you're only doing the sample size of one season and it's a position like coaching where the only stats are wins and losses, that's about the only fair judgment criteria you can use.

Although personally, these journalists or whoever comes up with the awards every year do far more quibbling over subjective shit than they claim to do. They could just as easily take into account Andy winning games largely through the defense, which is something he hasn't really done since the Jim Johnson days in Philly. To me that's no different than the handful of morons who gave votes to Drew Brees during Mahomes' first MVP season because lifetime achievement or some bullshit.

PunkinDrublic 07-12-2024 07:36 PM

Shoulda won it the last three years. Of course the course the East coast media gave it to Brian Daboll a couple years ago. The award is ****ing meaningless.

Yeah, the media is always gonna dig a coach who turned a bad team into a good one. Reid will always be overlooked because he's consistently great. It's a little unfortunate but it's a pretty empyy award and I imagine Reid is thrilled for his coaching peers to get their due

Pasta Little Brioni 07-12-2024 08:04 PM

Because the award is a damn joke

wazu 07-12-2024 08:26 PM

When he came in and completely turned the Chiefs around with Alex Smith at QB and didn't win it, you pretty much knew he never would again. He could go 20-0 this year and never be even considered.

stumppy 07-12-2024 08:58 PM

Coach is just chalking up Super Bowl wins for the Coach of the Decade award.

I'm sticking to my guns on Daboll. He's got juuuust enough Belichick stink on him to be damaged goods to a franchise.

Fired within the next 3 seasons. Calling it now.

He's got his eyes on a XXXL gold jacket, not a trophy.

staylor26 07-12-2024 10:34 PM

The SB is the real COTY award when you think about it

Red Dawg 07-13-2024 04:15 AM

Andy, Mahomes, Jones and Kelce are all 1st ballot HOF. As screwed up as the HOF is they will get that right at least. Mahomes should be MVP every year.

Demonpenz 07-13-2024 06:45 AM

Bill Self never wins it despite always winning

Nah, because Reid is consistently great he's not gonna have a lot of turnaround seasons because his team with mahomes will likely never be bad. NFL coach of the year unfortunately tends to care more about that. I don't think it's the worst thing because hall of Fame coaches don't care about a meaningless award and probably know it means a whole lot to a newer head coach always coaching for his job

Wisconsin_Chief 07-13-2024 08:50 AM

He’s pretty much unanimously viewed as the best coach in football, everyone knows it.

I like the way he wins Super Bowl trophies.

Pasta Little Brioni 07-13-2024 12:32 PM

Dude started 9-0 with Alex throwing to the keystone cops and didn't win one...

This! Now since he has PM, just think about that right there, he will never win another one unless God forbids we accomplish something spectacular without PH.

big nasty kcnut 07-13-2024 02:07 PM

Because they don't want to acknowledge greatness.

jjchieffan 07-13-2024 02:27 PM

His opportunity to win it was 2013 when he took the worst team in the league, added Alex Smith at quarterback, and made the playoffs. That's the kind of turnaround that usually gets COTY. But they didn't even do it that year. I don't think that he will ever get it again. Whatever. He's got 3 Superbowl rings in KC and a guaranteed ticket to Canton punched. They can keep their little meaningless award.

MarkDavis'Haircut 07-13-2024 06:00 PM

Coach of the Year at the collegiate level generally flips from national championship to surprise team depending on the situation.

The NFL seems to prioritize surprise team over everything else.

A championship winning coach hasn't received the AP award since Belichick in 2003.

Bump 07-13-2024 06:02 PM

ya coach of the year should be "coach that turned a losing team into a winning team" award.

Andy did that his first year here after having the #1 overall pick in one of the worst drafts the NFL has ever seen.

Yeah, No players in the 1st round ever made a pro bowl. That was just more pile on "because, Chiefs".
