I don't follow NBA much at all anymore so I ask, what happened to their season? What is this In Season Tournament crap?

Someone explain why the change and exactly what is this?

Is it fair to all teams?
Is there a Season after this Tourney

Think of the NBA Season as a sewer line, and the in-season tournament as a neighbor’s sewer line that is joined into it.

TLO 12-06-2023 01:31 PM

This is why I don't go to NBA games.

FloridaMan88 12-06-2023 01:33 PM

They are trying to make early season games more relevant.

But there is really no need for that... because gambling.

Grown ass men who are Bron worhippers attack if you say anyting about this dude and get all emotional over somebody who would step over their dead body and don't know who they are.

Would be funny if a team like the Warriors who aren't in the in season tournament end up winning the championship.

In Season tournament games are regular season games. All the teams were included in pool play.

I think it's worked pretty well. While my teams are out (OKC, MIN), it's pretty easy to see that the players have bought in and are brining a higher level of intensity to these games.

The Court designs and jerseys of the NBA have become comical. It's like the Oregon Ducks own every single NBA franchise now. I just turn the channel when teams wear something fugly. One of the many reasons I don't watch much NBA anymore.

As for the topic, why have a tournament at the beginning of the season, to break up the monotony of a long season? I mean, the season just started.

To generate better ratings on non-NFL days (Tuesdays and Fridays were when they played the games).

Adds excitement. I think it's pretty awesome, this tournament. They don't have a one-game single elimination tournament. The postseason tournament is to crown a champion. This is March Madness style one loss and you go home type of thing.

chiefzilla1501 12-06-2023 02:46 PM

Eh, I appreciate the creativity. It’s actually an interesting idea and I think baseball should do it too. It’s set up in a way that doesn’t really mess with scheduling but makes some regular season games a little interesting. All for ideas like that.

The interesting thing, at least my personal experience with betting on these games, is that teams have different motivations. Teams who have nothing to play for are more likely to rest players while teams in contention that need to win or win big go balls to the wall. So that’s not great. One thing that drives me nuts about the nba of late is how they just casually rest starters at the last minute.

All you need to know is that it is dumb as **** and the NBA has sucked for a few years now. It's an in season tournament for cash. Nobody is going to remember who won what 6 months from now so it really doesn't matter. If you need something early in the season to make the games more interesting and to ensure more of your star players actually play, then your product sucks.

Jordan, Magic, Bird, Shaq, Kobe, etc... didn't need a reason to play hard or just play at all. Jordan would have laughed in your ****ing face if you would have suggested he take games off to manage his load. It has turned into a league of entitled pussies led by the biggest pussy of all time, Lebron James.

My other theory is that you're going to get more social media regarding basketball because you can see their faces. The biggest marketing flaw of football is that they all wear face-covering helmets, which makes it harder to turn players into societal sensations.

The thing that I don't like about basketball is the bouncing.

You know where that came from. They started playing and it was too easy to just carry the ball down court and throw it in the peach basket, so they had to make it harder. They then made this nonsensical rule that you have to bounce the ball while you're moving. There's no reason you should have to do it. It has no metaphor for reality. You just have to bounce the ball to make it a little harder. And then everyone ignores the rule anyway.

Basketball should be more like football. You barrel down the court carrying the ball and other players try to stop you or knock you down or steal the ball from you. If you get down court then you can shoot. That, my friends, is a game. If people want the ball, they have to take it from you with violence. This bouncing thing is pathetic.

Probably an age thing and a location thing. KC has no team. I've had many of conversations with people in their 20s and 30s about the NBA (even in KC) however for some reason people in their 50s and 60s have a strange hatred about the NBA except for the Jordan days. I get it. Its rooted in different political ideology. I just like basketball and I remove myself from any politics of it. Most people increasingly are not able to do that. Thats why they hate womens soccer and the nba. Its why others hate Nascar. It is what it is. Wish it would change.

MLB regular season... largely pointless with 162 games.

NFL... no idea how they do it given so many awful, pointless games and the true fans just waiting it out for when the games matter between the 2-4 contenders each year.

NHL... the most watchable regular season, IMO, but games don't really get going until Feb or March... far too many back to back games, thus teams going through the motions.

NBA... does the regular season matter much? Something like 20 teams make the playoffs/play-in now?

Without really knowing anything about it, seems like a way to gain some attention while football is in peak season... anything to make shit more interesting for both fans and players while hopefully having the better teams meet more often seems like a good thing.

That's good, and hopefully formatted in a way to take advantage of rivalries or at least potentially teams meeting again in the playoffs to add some extra spice later.

Some interesting trivia, first team credited with dribbling was Yale. Players could only shoot or pass so they found a loophole that they could bounce it as a pass to themselves. Balls were too shitty to maintain a dribble so it was just a ton of 1-dribble moves.

I guess I don’t see what’s ridiculous. For the most part it isn’t some side tournament like the maui college bball tournament where it’s a side tournament. That would be awful for the nba because it would mess up schedules

They’re regularly scheduled games where they just decided to add some extra stakes. If it was disrupting the scheduling that would be one thing but it’s mostly not. The only dumb thing is the eyesore courts. Otherwise it’s one of those ideas that at worst feels like just another regular season game to fans who don’t care

sedated 12-06-2023 06:02 PM

College basketball does the same with the Thanksgiving week tournaments. They do it because its fun for the fans and apparently gets the players into it too (Durant said the same just yesterday, feels like the playoffs).

No one at the NBA offices bothered consulting with the 60-year-old NFL fan demo to see if they would like it because apparently every 60-year-old NFL fan admittedly refuses to watch the NBA because it has sucked since the 90s.

Yeah, it's true though. After the great Celtics, Lakers and Philly teams in the early and mid 80s, and later the Pistons, it was all downhill after that. You're spot on.

I mean you could say that about any sport. Players were joking and laughing it up on the field right after the Chiefs got their asses kicked on Sunday night. Didn’t seem like it bothered most of them at all.

Yeah it's true. As a KC fan, Raiders-Chiefs, Royals-Yankees, that stuff gets in your blood. It's fine, but it does make it seem like it means less to the players than it did back then. And those guys weren't getting paid.

I think all these sports would benefit from shorter seasons and smaller playoff fields ... if you're interested primarily in the quality of the product delivered to the fans.

Of course, none of these leagues are interested in that, they're interested in getting the biggest TV contract they can get, regardless of how the quality of the product degrades.

Garcia Bronco 12-07-2023 07:26 AM

The in season tournament is basically applying a soccer type group stage knockout stage type of thing to the season. It doesn't impact the season All it does is add some excitement around early games for games they're already going to play. I think the NFL should do this cuz no one gives a s*** about division winners.

Hmmm, I believe the last time I have watched any NBA games was when Tim Duncan and David Robinson were winning with the Spurs.
Early 2000s, holy shit, about 20 years ago!

Of course, none of these leagues are interested in that, they're interested in getting the biggest TV contract they can get, regardless of how the quality of the product degrades.

And fewer teams.... both in the playoffs and overall.

They’ve doubled down on the ugly court.

This in season tournament thing is the best thing they've done in the last decade for the NBA outside of calling flopping penalties...which unfortunately they don't seem to care about anymore. Don't see why this won't gain steam each season.

The NBA sucks ass. I like the NFL, PGA Tour, MLB, all of the soccer leagues better than NBa. Every time ESPN or Fox Sports talks about the NBA I fast forward the remote control.
