BlackHelicopters 09-11-2023 11:47 AM

22 years.

TLO 09-11-2023 11:52 AM

That day was totally surreal. Truly one of those moments you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news.

I was in 7th grade about to start science class. My principal walked in and told my teacher, and he started crying. I didn't really grasp the severity of the situation at the time, I just remember being horrified by what I saw on TV.

ThyKingdomCome15 09-11-2023 11:53 AM

Our world was never the same.

Hog Rider 09-11-2023 12:02 PM

I was in the office and heard "a plane just hit one of the Twin Towers"
I thought "what nimrod would fly a Cessna into a building".

Moments later - Spent the rest of the day in a pretty quiet, solemn atmosphere.

Eureka 09-11-2023 12:07 PM

I was up early on the west coast 6AM. At the time my satellite dish gave us east coast TV time frame. I was watching the today show on NBC and they started covering the first tower that was struck and then a second plane hit. It was all live.

I called in sick that day.

60 minutes had a pretty good show on it last night. Man, what those men and women gave, and what the victims went through.

I was thinking during the 9/11 moment of silence last night at the Giants/Cowboys game, most of the players on the field were infants or preschool age when 9/11 happened and barely have a recollection of that day.

I was blown away when the towers (and building 7) fell and crumbled to dust like they did.

The 60 Minutes episode from last year about the FDNY on 9/11 was really good. Worth watching if you haven't seen it. Pretty sure it's on youtube.

It's in the OP

I'll never forget being in my apartment in Mountain View CA and my Mom calling me early in the morning and telling me to turn on the TV. Plane 1 had hit tower and while we were on the phone talking, the other plane hit the tower and I thought it was a replay.

The most ****ed up day in my life.

My best friend had his plane grounded in Oklahoma while flying cross country from NJ to Las Vegas and had to rent a car and drive home.

Lost several people I worked with at Dean Witter in one of the towers.

It has changed the trajectory of airline travel forever.

BigBeauford 09-11-2023 01:24 PM

This channel surfing is a great encapsulation of TV that day:

Updated, I was trying to find that

jdubya 09-11-2023 02:01 PM

On a strike team on our way to the Darby Fire when the ST leader got on the radio and said, "Those of you that have a radio in your engine, turn it on now. Shit is going down in New York".

Hoopsdoc 09-11-2023 02:19 PM

I was at work. We all gathered in the break room to watch it on tv. I’ll never forget it.

I think people who didn’t experience it have no idea how truly momentous it was. I remember no one really knew what was going on. When I went home, there were still rumors that we were under a sustained attack.

I remember everyone hoarding gas. The stations were packed. My cousin actually got in a fight at one.

Doesn’t seem possible it’s been that long ago.

We are less free now.

ChiefsFan63 09-11-2023 06:17 PM

I was at the station that day. We had the tv on in the background when they broke in about the North tower being hit. Watched the South tower hit live. At first the feeling was what a tragedy, then the second tower was hit and we knew we were under attack. All training was cancelled for the day. It was non stop coverage from New York.

Watching the fires advance there was little doubt that the towers would eventually collapse. Those men and women that entered the building knew the same thing. Their hope was to get as many people out as possible. Witnessing the collapse brought a fire station full of grown men to tears. I didn't know a single one personally, but I lost 343 brothers and sisters that day.

To this day watching footage of 9/11 brings tears. Visiting ground zero is on my bucket list

Never Forget..

DenverChief 09-11-2023 06:26 PM

Disappointed in how few replies to this thread - not a "major milestone" in terms of years passed but 22 years ago seems like a lifetime ago.

I had just separated from the Army and was still in my first year of undergrad. I was awoken by my roommate telling me to hurry and come to the living room. I arrived to watch the footage after both towers had been struck but before the Pentagon. I remember the radio and TV coverage was constant. Radio stations barely played any music. My drive into my PT College job was surreal, when I arrived they had just delivered TV's to the Admin building where I worked and we watched for the better part of an hour before around 11am they decided to close the campus and cancel all classes for the safety of everyone. The next month1 was just non-stop 9/11 everywhere you turned until the bombing of Afghanistan.

9/11 really solidified my career choice - I knew I wanted to continue to be the protector the military had shaped me to be and eventually got that wish and haven't looked back.

18 years old, living in a party house. Had stayed up all night the night before till like 6am, all of us, drinking and smoking pot. I woke up around 3:30 in the afternoon, first one awake, and turned the TV On MTV... i watched for a couple of minutes.. it took a sec to realize what I was watching at first I was not sure it was real... so I changed the channel. Same shit on the other channel. And every channel... at that point I woke everyone up and we learned about 9/11 hours and hours later than everyone else in the world.

DenverChief 09-11-2023 07:23 PM

Who here is old enough to remember what they were doing on April 19 1995? I'll never forget that day either.

Megatron96 09-11-2023 07:30 PM

I was sleeping. My wife woke me up and dragged me downstairs to the TV. The first tower was still up, but smoking. The second plane hit the 2nd tower, and I said, "what movie are you watching?"

Terrible, terrible day.

George Liquor 09-11-2023 07:32 PM

Crazy to believe that this place has been around since i was a junior in high school.

mlyonsd 09-11-2023 07:56 PM

Eleven months before the attack the wife and I were on an anniversary trip visiting Manhattan in October for the first time. We were walking around early on a Sunday morning after breakfast and walked up on a downtown fire station that was having an open house. Nobody else was around and there were three firefighters standing outside that stopped us to talk. They were interested in where we were from and invited us in for a tour. When the towers fell I instantly thought about those three guys and wondered their fate.

Awful awful day.

I was in high school. Saw the second plane hit on live television. I just remember feeling terrified that we were going to war and I’d get drafted. I was also angry and willing to do my part but man that was a scary time for a kid that age.

Stryker 09-11-2023 08:25 PM

I will never forget! I was on this thread during the event. WE WERE ONE! That day was awful but we worked through this event. Man I have been on this site through so many events. God I stared at my TV for hours in disbelief. We are the USA and we prevailed. God bless all of the first responders who sacrificed that ungodly day. Man.

DCTwister 09-11-2023 09:02 PM

Too real, I really don’t like to watch all the documentaries and stories about 9-11. I can watch all the WW2 documentaries about all the terrible things that happened back then, but 9-11 was just too close to home. I live near DC and saw the Pentagon the day after. Flown out of Dulles a million times. Stood on the roof of the World Trade Center just a year before.

I was on CP as well that morning. Gotta hand it to Clint. He was the first one to call Osama. Noticed there were a lot of names in that thread I haven't seen post in a very long time. We may have lost them as well. :(

9th grade, I remember us asking our football coach if practice was canceled and he said "when pigs fly".

Flew home from the home opener against the Raiders the day before this happened. Weird AF.

Pointer19 09-12-2023 08:02 AM

Still watching documentaries on (I think) Nat Geo. One of the viper drivers was talking about how they launched without any ordnance, and her flight lead told her that he'd hit the cockpit, and she'd need to hit an engine. Thankful for the guys that took back the plane and put it down in Pennsylvania instead of forcing two pilots into a suicide mission to prevent another strike.

I was on duty that day too. We are 2 1/2 hours north of OKC. We were ready to assist but never got that call. They drove that Ryder truck right through here and constructed the bomb 90 miles north of here. I was down in OKC a month later and the devastation was incredible. Windows were still blown out of so many buildings through out downtown.

My wife and I visited the memorial this summer. It was very moving. I would highly suggest you go if you get the chance.

I was sitting in the great American sports bar at the mall of America. Maybe not when it happened, but they had coverage on.

Same here. Shortly after the second tower fell they closed the office and advised us to get the hell out of the Loop. Made the trek to Union Station as quickly as possible, going out of my way to avoid nearby Sears Tower. Getting on the train home was pure pandemonium; reminded me of the leaving Paris scene from Casablanca. Shoved my way into a packed vestibule right before the doors closed.
