The Co-Founder of OceanGate wants to send 1000 people to venus!! Sign up info here

Quote:

The cofounder of OceanGate, the firm whose CEO died on a deep-sea dive for the Titanic, now wants to send 1,000 people to Venus

Guillermo Söhnlein, who cofounded OceanGate with the deceased Stockton Rush in 2009, has revealed plans to build a colony that will reside in the atmosphere of the planet Venus—and he’s looking for 1,000 people to live there.
Söhnlein left OceanGate in 2013, retaining a minority stake in the now-shuttered company. He has had a long-standing interest in space commercialization, however. And he’s approaching it with an aggressive timeline. He hopes to send those people to Venus by 2050.

That’s going to be tough. The surface temperature of Venus is 872° F, and the pressure is roughly the same as 3,000 feet below the ocean’s surface. A 2008 article in Universe Today, however, theorized that the area 50 kilometers above the planet could be more Earth-like and could potentially support a floating city. (You’d have to do something about the sulfuric acid in the atmosphere and lack of oxygen, though, it noted.)
Söhnlein is undeterred, though, telling Business Insider, “I think it is less aspirational than putting a million people on the Martian surface by 2050…I think it’s also very doable.” He did not detail how he planned to achieve this, however.
Attracting people to make that journey could be challenging following the OceanGate tragedy, which saw five people die. Söhnlein likes to invest in companies that push the envelope, though. The goal, he says, is to help humanity escape the boundaries of Earth.

Venus is the warmest planet in the solar system. Its atmosphere is chock-full of carbon dioxide, its surface temperature could melt lead, and sulfuric acid rains down from its clouds. Its atmospheric pressure is crushing — more than 90 times that of Earth, according to NASA.

“I think I’ve been driven to help make humanity a multi-planet species since I was 11 years old,” he said. “I had this recurring dream of being the commander of the first Martian colony…Forget OceanGate. Forget Titan. Forget Stockton. Humanity could be on the verge of a big breakthrough and not take advantage of it because we, as a species, are gonna get shut down and pushed back into the status quo.”

Beginning to think this guy isn't a failed explorer at all, but really a rich and imaginative serial killer . . .

P.S. I happen to have a few rolls of 'out of date' carbon fiber (black duct tape) in case he's short some

This was a very romantic song between myself and a man I saw for a summer.

I need more information before I can make a decision. Are these condos? Apartments? Single family floating space pods? What are the property taxes? Who handles maintenance? And are pets allowed?

Isn't venus like 400° and the atmosphere made of poison gas?

Oh i guess i could have read the OP lmao

Kiimo 08-01-2023 09:03 PM

My favorite part here is how they just have to figure out how to develop anti-gravity suspension fields first so the shit can float like Cloud City

Kiimo 08-01-2023 09:04 PM

Listen, all we need to do first is figure out how to fold space, but if we all put our heads together, I think we can knock that out pretty quick, and it should not prevent you from sending me money in the meantime

Stewie 08-01-2023 09:33 PM

I was shopping at Bass Pro and Walmart today. I saw several off-the-shelf items that are perfect for this voyage.

Venus only has 91% of Earth's gravity, and it would be even lower at high altitudes. I suspect you could throw it away forever.

I feel like I'll have a similar movement.

would love to be at some of the meetings

Obvious humor aside...

Theoretically you could change Venus' atmosphere by scraping gasses and/or creating a huge solar shield to terraform into a livable planet (which would be great considering its gravity is about 91% of Earth's so gravitational effects on bones and such wouldn't be as problematic as with the moon, space stations, or Mars). The problem is that it would take centuries of continual work to do, and way too much money.

An interesting and curious thought though nonetheless. I hope one day mankind is self sustainably living on other planets. It's the only way to guarantee the survival of the only known sentience in the universe.

lewdog 08-04-2023 12:31 PM

If the Earth is 6,000 years old, how old is Venus?

Many years ago, I read an article about a plan to terraform Venus using some sort of bacteria or algae or something. Apparently this organism likes to eat the stuff that's currently in Venus' atmosphere and then it belts out the waste as something that doesn't trap heat as much. I don't remember the details, but either it spit out oxygen, or you do another phase with a different organism that takes in CO and spits out O2. The author was arguing that you could terraform Venus pretty inexpensively by dumping some of this stuff into the upper atmosphere and then waiting a hundred years. I was intrigued.

Venus isn't real it was put there around 5k years ago to test your faith.

Interesting. I've never heard of this. I'll have to do some digging and see what I can find on this. Of course, whatever lives there has to be able to survive at like 900 degrees Fahrenheit, so it'll have to be some really resilient (probably bio-engineered) bacteria!

This article from a website I've never heard of references the idea as being proposed by Carl Sagan in 1961, but says that barriers have been identified that make it impossible. Darn it. The proposal offers some other methods, but they aren't as easy as a fire-and-forget organic solution.

Megatron96 08-04-2023 01:50 PM

Conditions in Venus’ upper atmosphere (50-60km) are roughly equivalent to the Earth’s; including temp/pressure. It has been proposed so where that since oxygen and nitrogen would be lifting, gases on Venus, a colony could be floated in Venus’ upper atmosphere.

This guy should be the very last guy to get that contract though.

The winds on Venus are roughly 200 mph. You don't want someone leaving the lids off their trash cans or not bagging their lawn clippings there, so you might want to have an HOA.
