Attending my first Chiefs game
It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally planning to make the big trip to visit Kansas City from Australia to see my Chiefs play. With this thread I'm mainly keen to suss out the seating situation at Arrowhead, but any general advice or useful information to know when visiting Kansas City would be great to hear.
I've been in touch with a ticket rep, so generally know how the ticket buying process works and I'm ready to grab a couple of home game tickets shortly after the schedule is released this week. I plan on going to the home opener, so I have my fingers crossed that there will be at least two home games in the first three weeks of the season. A couple of basic questions I have:
Aside from Chiefs home games, I'm hoping to catch at least one Mizzou and/or K-State game, as well as a Royals game and Sporting Kansas City match (depresso I know, but when in Rome right). A trip to the Pro Football HOF would also be on the list if at all possible. I'll probably bump this thread a few times over the coming months with more questions, but decided to get the ball rolling by hearing what the upstanding Kansas Citians of the Planet have to say first! Cheers |
Go to Buddys on Main Street.

I really enjoyed my trip to the Pro Football HOF - great experience.

Famous Dave’s for bbq is a must!
The WWI museum is fantastic. It’s famous on TikTok for its male restroom, but there are other things to see there. While you are there, the Union Station is within walking distance, and close to those is a Jack Stack. Take the free trolly to the river market and get some food you’ve never had before. That’s a good day right there. |

Attending my first Chiefs game
I’m not a local but I’ve been to a couple of games. From a fellow out of town KC fan here’s some recommendations:
Stay away from the George Brett statue unless you’re coming heavy or have lube (NTTAWWT). Make a reservation at Q39 as early as they’ll let you. If you don’t mind waiting in line try all the bbq joints you can. Boulevard Brewery has great beer. Try to get a tour of it fits in your schedule. Go to the WW1 museum. Go to a Jazz lounge (I liked Green Lady). We love Fosters in the US. Word on the street is that, “It’s Australian for beer”. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
The original Joe's KC at the gas station is a must.
After that, tell us what you enjoy doing. I've always enjoyed the first few rows of the upper deck, whether it's midfield or the all-22 view behind an end zone.... but if money is no object, sitting close to the Chiefs bench is amazing. |
Kansas City Joe's BBQ, original location. Some of the best food you'll ever eat.

If you want to catch a royals game make sure you are going in September, they won’t be playing in October.
If you are flying all the way across the world you may as well get the best seats in the house. Don’t cheap out and buy shit tickets, you’ll just be sitting with a bunch of drunk shitheads and other teams fans. If you want to see the hall of fame too then its a 12 hour drive, or an additional plane flight. Even domestic flights in the US are a pain in the ass with security and delays so plan accordingly. There is pretty much nothing else worthwhile in the canton Ohio area so the HOF trip may not be a great investment tbh. Kansas city is pretty cool, but if you want to see some sights while your in the us (nature/geological type things) west and spend a few days in Colorado or Wyoming. Tons of cool shit to see if your into mountains/forest types of adventures. Also, Get joes BBQ. |
By yourself or what?
|
You could always go golfing in Grandview.
If you are looking for a HOF, there is the Negro Leagues HOF in KC. |
The Nelson-Atkins museum is world class if you are into viewing art, plus it's another incredible piece of KC architecture along with Union Station (which is also a must do).
Steamboat Arabia Museum. I need to revisit this place. Jack Stack is also great for BBQ. |

Cool Crest mini golf.

Harry Truman presidential library is interesting and it’s not too far from the stadium.

Id just spend all my time in the new KC airport. There is something for everyone there you can even catch some art and watch the game from there. There is a good chance you will meet up with a lot of CP'ers they love airport lurking. LMAO

I would suggest tickets somewhere around midfield (between the 30 yard lines) and not the end zones. You can even get a great view in the 3rd level.
|
If you feel that you want to take a short excursion from the beautiful new KCI do I have a plan? Just down the road 3 to 4 miles in beautiful Platte Woods is In A Tub get some deep-fried tacos and a burrito with chili and cheese. Then head to Dicks sporting goods at Zona Rosa to get your chiefs gear to wear back at the airport.

Meet Billay at the George Brett Statue

For seats, we sit on the 35 yard line about halfway up the upper deck, and my dad sits right at the side of the endzone 12 rows off the field. I prefer our seats to my dad's, because I can watch plays develop. My dad is so close I end up watching the game through the jumbotron whenever I sit down there. I'd sideline in the lower part of the upper deck is the way to go. Also, the higher rows of the lower level have the overhang of the club level above them, so you'd be safe in case of any bad weather.
I highly recommend the stadium tour. You'll get to see parts of Arrowhead that you'd never get to see otherwise, and learn a lot about the history of the Chiefs and the AFC in general (since Lamar Hunt helped found it). It also starts and ends in the Chiefs store, so you'll be able to do some shopping there as well. My favorite barbeque in KC is Arthur's and KC Joe's. Many will have differing opinions, so take that for what it's worth. If you enjoy some good bars and good food, you should definitely check out the Power & Light District and Westport. Any local art museum in just about any city is interesting if you're into whatever exhibit they have going on. Union Station usually has some pretty cool photo ops, as well as being an interesting place to visit. I'm a few hours from KC, so I'm not necessarily a local. I'd like to think I have a good idea of what it's like to "visit" there. :) |
You might enjoy a UMKC basketball game
|
Santa Fe neighborhood is a must see tourist attraction
|
I might add if you are missing a taste of home someone mentioned Outback and there is one right outside of Zona Rosa.
After In A Tub you will probably need a restroom there is a Kohls near but it's kinda hard to find. I'd probably just head back to the airport and have them page Twisted Chief. He knows a lot about those restrooms and will see that you find a nice comfortable shitter. He is not from KC but he's here a lot and is always looking for a Boy Scout Merit Badge in our airport. He won't steer you wrong and seems to need friends. |
Here is KC travel advice from the Oakland A's broadcasters

In my experience anything lower level between the 20s is outstanding. If it were me making a once-in-a-lifetime international trip, I'd be looking for something as close to the field, and as close to the 50 as I could swing, and if I was spending the money to get really close to that spot I'd be looking on the Chiefs sideline. George Blowfish has front row seats on the 50 that my son and I got to sit in once. My son caught a glove that Demarcus Robinson tossed him. Those seats are practically on the team bench and just watching what's going on with the Chiefs sideline is fascinating. |
I can't believe someone mentioned Famous Daves as a "must". I'd drive a hundred miles past a Famous Daves to get to Joe's or Jack Stack.
|
Check out Westport if you either want to score with drunken American girls or get shot at.

If you don't end up on the first couple rows of the chiefs sideline, I would base my choice on the position of the sun. I always hated getting roasted in the sun and paying 10 bucks for water.

Congratulations!
You won't find a bad seat in Arrowhead, but sitting in the lower level probably provides the best overall experience. During the week, tours are availabe at Arrowhead. Plan to stay downtown, not near the stadium. The stadium is off the beaten path and there's not much to do out there in terms of restaurants, shopping, entertainment, etc. You'll have a much better time staying in the downtown area. Look at downtown proper, River Market, Crossroads, Union Station area. These are all along the street car route, and will allow you to travel through the KC downtown area for free without the need for a car. Definitely visit the WW1 museum while you're here. Australia played a major role (over 300k soldiers) in WW1, and several Aussie uniforms and relics are on display in the museum. Also, see some live jazz while you're here. The Green Lady Lounge is my favorite – grab a cocktail there one evening and take in the prohibition era vibes. Also worth visiting if you're into live music is Knucklehead's Saloon, which is in Electric Park near the J. Reiger Distillery. They have live blues/country/rock music every day and some of the cheapest drink prices in town. Have fun! |
If you're there for the first three weeks of the season there is a good chance it will still be hot as balls.
Then again being from Australia maybe it will be perfect for you. Just go to the Plaza and downtown ffs don't go see the Roos lmao |

I wouldn't bother with any of the bbq joints mentioned the best BBQ is near the Stadium in Raytown, Harp BBQ 6633 Raytown Rd, Raytown, MO. Best I've had anywhere just try it. Its in the Raytown Center Shops. People kept telling me to try it so we were out that way and they made me a believer. Now when my wife is craving the mall Independence Center we slip over to Rattown for BBQ. Burnt ends are awesome also get a side of the sweet potato burnt ends. You can thank me later!

Another thing to consider while you're here is visiting a range. It will probably the only chance you'll ever have to fire a gun.
I work at a range now, and we often get foreigners who come in wanting to shoot. As long as they have passports and are from a country on the accepted list, which includes Australia, they're good to go. They pretty much universally enjoy the experience. |
Don't send visitors to Raytown SMH

Congrats. Have fun, take a lot of pics, and try the BBQ. Too many great ones to list, but these guys will point you at some really good ones. I'm a fan of Arthur Bryant's, Big T's, and Gates

We had a Famous Dave bbq go in near my home. At that time we had Smokehouse, Smoking Guns and Hog Jaws in Riverside now in NKC. It was about a year are so with hardly a car in the parking lot. They then cut a hole in the side of the building and put a funky drive through. Still no business and you could never smell woodsmoke when driving by. So out it went and a Fat Shack started remodeling signs up but never opened.

I have a Missouri relative who raves about Famous Dave's. I don't get it. I picked a completely random barbecue place in his town the last time I was there and it was far better. Famous Dave's is a last-resort barbecue place when you're having barbecue withdrawal and there's no other place around.

Not sure how long you've been a fan but I was choked up and overwhelmed my first time. Treated myself for my 50th birthday.

You know, like what the city is actually famous for and sometimes its worth it for a traveler to venture into the less popular areas to find the hidden gems only locals know about and share info about on this site |
Thanks to everyone with recommendations so far.

More generally I enjoy all kinds of sightseeing. Everything from hikes to those lookouts at the upper floors of skyscrapers. The Ozarks seem interesting? I do plan on visiting the US again one day, but this go round will mainly be dedicated to KC, the surrounding area and maybe other parts of the US where one/two day trips are a realistic option during the week between games. The Rock and Roll HOF is in downtown Cleveland right next to the factory of sadness(Browns Stadium) and is also cool to see. Both HOF’s are pretty cool, but there’s not much else to see in the area. |
