Wally's First Game As Chiefs Head Coach

Just watched it.

You remember this one:

AS11's debut as QB1. Played the Jaguars at their (almost empty) stadium in high heat. Jamaal Charles got a couple of TUGs then left the game early with an upper-body injury.

What stood out was the defense, though. I mean, damn ...

Poe, DeVito, Houston, Hali, DJ, Flowers, Berry, Lewis, etc.

That was 2013 and both Houston and Hali had 11 sacks that year. 11 each. DJ was credited with 4.5 sacks and 2 picks while the d-backs also had 4.5 sacks and 7 or 8 picks over the course of the season.

My takeaway? I miss defense ... and Jamaal Charles.

I understand.

I cannot wax nostalgic with FAX, for 2 reasons :

1. Too many painful memories to unpack there

And

2. We now have Mahomes.

Bowser 08-31-2022 10:41 AM

The season before the Chiefs won 2 games and sent 6 (8?) players to the Pro Bowl. Confusing times, then.

notorious 08-31-2022 10:41 AM

I remember watching Alex throw a normal pass and thinking "wow, that is way better than what we've watched the last 5 years" and I was right.

Rain Man 08-31-2022 10:47 AM

I miss nothing before 2017.

(Before you correct me, I'm not old enough for the 1969 Chiefs.)

I remember posting "That was the best half of Chiefs football I had seen in many years"

Titty Meat 08-31-2022 10:50 AM

I was a little nervous when they blocked that punt and it was 2-0. Felt like the same 2012 team there for about 5 mins

This, this, and more this.

Gary Cooper 08-31-2022 11:19 AM

I remember every season based off how it ended.

I'd rather not remember 2013 for that reason.

I can still see that fumble bouncing softly and perfectly right back to Andrew Luck......

(apologies, lol)

DanBecky 08-31-2022 11:33 AM

I didn’t realize Flowers played on that first Reid team. Seems forever ago.

Eleazar 08-31-2022 11:36 AM

I went to that game. The Jaguars led the game 2-0 after a punt was blocked, and were shut out the rest of the way. Junior Hemingway caught a TD.

I was a fan of the KC Chiefs back in those days. Interestingly, I still am.

scho63 08-31-2022 11:42 AM

Henne mopped up back then too!

It was good and bad. 2013 was not a great year unfortunately. It was a terrible emotional ride.

Start off 9-0. Everything’s great. Then finish the season on a 2-5 decline and lose the division title.

Then the worst game of my ****ing fandom happens in Indianapolis. My God

Thank God those days are over

My takeaway I would rather have Mahomes, Super Bowls and no defense than ASS11 and Defense.

FUN FACT: That 28-2 win over Jacksonville ended up becoming a Scorigami.

Interesting theory on how we got Andy here (But may bring up some PTSD as it looks back on the Haley era). (18 min video)

Here is the same video that gets right to the theory but with out the info about the drive that possibly got us Andy. (less PTSD of the Haley era but it does mention Romeo Crennel) (Starts @ 11:00 minute in)

It appears that many Planeteers who chose to engage with this thread-thing are callous when it comes to my sensitive feelings ...

I'm not nostalgic about AS11 and 4-yard passes on 3rd and 12. I don't long for the days of Donnie Avery and Anthony Fasano. Far from it.

As one who is forced to take hourly insulin injections after having ingested too many boxes of Mahomes Magic Crunch, I am all in with our current approach to scoring more points than the enemy du jour.

However, I'm not thinking in binary terms. I would simply prefer to have a dangerous passing game that is complimented by a fearsome defense and a running back that has HOF potential.

Is that too much to ask?

FAX THE REASONABLE

Need to revisit that game thread.

FloridaMan88 08-31-2022 01:25 PM

That game felt like winning the Super Bowl compared to the nightmarish Fat Scott shitshow.

mililo4cpa 08-31-2022 01:29 PM

Didn’t Tamba have a pick 6 that game too?

Yep, good recall.

Possibly the easiest pick six to have ever been pick six'd.

Andy's win against the Eagles on primetime (I think Thursday night?) in that 2013 season was a game that always sticks in my memories. It wasn't particularly flashy or anything, but had some really nice moments of just competent, good football on both sides of the ball. It was clear to everybody watching it who the better team was, and everybody seemed to be happy for Andy. And of course, there's that postgame interview with Sal in which Andy basically told him to go screw himself in the most polite Andy way possible.

For me, that was the highlight of that particular season. I don't look back on that season fondly because of how it ended, but that Eagles game was a particularly bright spot and a nice snapshot memory.
