The great big off road thread!

I did a quick search and didnt see anything exactly like this.

With the dead time approaching my family and i will be doing a lot of camping and SxS/dirtbiking. I thought it would be cool to have a place to talk about what your riding/driving and places you go.

I wheel a Honda Pioneer 1000 its practical, fits in my dads toy hauler, seats both kids, the wife, and my niece. I've also got a KTM 520 bike, a KLX 110 to play on, and a chinese 70 my 8 year olds been learning on. My dad recently bought a Toyota FJ cruiser that will get some time around Disney Oklahoma at some point.

Any dead hookers could be a valuable life lesson(stay away from areas Von Miller may have frequented).

Monty 05-19-2022 10:43 AM

I like this thread, good call. We do SxS with our RZR. Creede CO, the Black Hills, Devil's Tower areas have been our favs so far. I'll add pics when I get home as those on the other hard drive. As a kid, we did a lot in the Tetons in Wyoming with the original Toyota Landcruiser. Looking to head up into Montana next. There's a ton of areas that are absolutely awesome.

There may have been one in this hunting camper conversion thing. Cucumber creek in souther oklahoma. Mostly logging trails, a nice spot for my son to get some experience keeping up with the pack.

FRCDFED 05-19-2022 01:02 PM

Good call! We like to ride our sxs either with our group of friends or by ourselves. The trails we typically ride are either down in SW MO (Salem/Eminence) area (a buddy has family down there), or in NE MO (there's a new park called Pikes), or over at Harpole’s Heartland Lodge in IL. Typically it's a good time!

I currently own a 2021 RZR Turbo S4 Velocity and a 2017 RZR XP 1000.

I'm starting a spinoff business selling KTM and Husqvarna parts.

Ive spent the last year and a half building up a social media presence only to see our I.G get hacked last week. Someone uploaded a bunch of snuff videos to our I.G account and got it banned. FML.

I just sold my ktm 520, kind of want a raptor just for a dunes bike. I just sold my 85 quadracer 250. But would really like to get my boy to the sand. I was only ever mediocre at MX. Broke a wrist racing supercross in claremore Oklahoma in 08. Kind of turned me off from it lol.

Grew up on the dirt riding a Jim Steen Hodaka.

Good chance I'm going to purchase my buddy's XR400 this summer. He raced for thirty years.

Man XR 400 prices are nuts right now. My best friend as a kids dad had one and i thought it was the coolest bike ever, so i check on them from time to time. Theres one listed in the tulsa area for 4k.

Ya, pretty sweet bike. He doesnt ride it anymore, so I'm going to jump on it.

I'd love to find a vintage Elsinore.

Well i sold my sons coolster 70 and this forced him to graduate to the klx 110 (143). We took advantage of the awesome weather yesterday and put some miles on it. There were some growing pains, we had to talk about carrying speed over rough terrain instead of slowing down and losing balance. By the end of the day he was pointing the front wheel and shooting.

(edit: he has gloves and wears them, they got wet playing on the boat ramp but he wanted a picture to show his friends before we loaded up.)

My wife has lost her cool once on the trail in a creek crossing. We went through leaning to her side with my son in the middle of a polaris ranger. Then got a mile or two down the trail and it dead ended and we had to go back. She called me every name under the sun and she and my son walked across up stream. Then after watching me navigate it flawlessly as it leaned to my side she realized it wasnt as bad as it seemed and apologized.ROFL

I’m not far from pincher but I do t think they let you ride anymore. As a teen and young man me and a few pals would pitch in to make waynoka trips. About 400$ back then was fuel, camping, food and wrist bands. We were on the sand every chance we got!

Should have hung on to those old atvs they sell for a ****ing fortune right now!

Picked up a 2018 crf 110 for my son this morning! He’s got an 03 klx but with as much as he’s been riding I wanted something a little newer I could depend on. We’re headed to cucumber creek camp ground in Arkansas in two weeks. Hopefully he can put 15-20 miles on it!

Dunerdr 05-16-2024 07:11 PM

Been awhile since this threads had any action. Headed to little Sahara Oklahoma next weekend. Picked up a toy hauler and can’t wait!

Bearcat 05-16-2024 08:34 PM

There are so many great places to ride in Arizona... it's pretty much the only reason I'll camp, so I can spend a weekend on a quad.

I use Avenza maps, easily downloadable and great coverage of off road trails.

Dunerdr 05-16-2024 08:48 PM

That looks fantastic! Yeah I’m not a “camper” per se. but if it means a couple days of riding I’ll be there!

I used avenza for awhile then switched to onx off road. Happy with both.

That app looks nice... if I road more on completely unknown trails or maybe multi-day rides, I might pay for something like that, but generally they're pretty easy out and back type of trails to navigate (even though you can really ride out into BFE).

I haven't done much this year, but hoping to get out in the next few weeks before it starts hitting 90°+ everyday.

I hadn't ever thought about huge sand dune places existing in the US until driving out to San Diego once and the dunes are right up against the highway, and you suddenly feel like you're in the Sahara (much less in OK)... Even for living in the desert, it was pretty trippy.

I know a couple people who will spend a weekend out there, but haven't made the trip yet. I think it would be a blast though.

There’s several! I’ve got a few bucket list spots I’d like to go. When my son’s old enough to appreciate it I’ll get another quad and hit some. St Anthony in Idaho, glamis in cali for its sheer size, dining in cali is supposed to have the tallest and dunes half way up dunes when the wind is right, the pismo beach because well it’s a beach too lol. Being from eastern Oklahoma makes all these places a damn drive lol.

Used to go to Oceano Dunes near Pismo Beach a few times a year with our toys. Finally just got to crowded and the State keeps shrinking the riding areas. It was always great camping on the beach though. These days we make trips out to St Anthony’s, Sand Mountain and the Oregon Dunes. My favorite bike is my 1997 Yamaha banshee but recently caved and got a new toy recently.

That's a bad boy! I've been fixing and flipping a few bikes here and there for extra cash. Keep hoping to come across a 250r or banshee or something but the market is nuts. Really would like to build and ol two smoker and a blaster for my son to hit some of the iconic places together when he's a little older and a better rider. I'm in a Facebook group called daily dose of dunes and the guy who runs it rides St. A's all the time looks amazing.

There are lots of fun trails around Disney, don't have to tangle with the big obstacles to have fun. Part of the enjoyment I get from wheeling there is packing a cooler and going to obstacles like Viagra and Little Blue to watch people with more money than me tear up their rigs trying to climb them.
Ever hear of K-ROCKS? It's a pay to play park west of Ft. Scott with lots of fun trails to wonder around. You should check it out some time.

I hadn't heard of that. I was flipping though the last issue of dirt wheels that had the top riding spots for each state and Kansas wasn't even listed. I thought that was really strange. I've been all over Oklahoma, into a lot of Arkansas and ridden Chadwick in MO, I'm always looking for new spots in the area, good long weekend type trips. My wife has every other Friday off and that works out nicely for it.

I had never heard of the place, and it has an interesting history about how it came to be.
Always looking for new places to ride, and that's close enough for me to make it a day trip.

Dunerdr 05-27-2024 06:43 PM

Anyone rode st joe state park? Any good?

I’d like to hit Chadwick again but it’s got a maximum width. Id have to take the two quads and that leaves the wife and daughter hanging. Keeping that trip on the back burner for when they have something else going.

I'm all fired up about getting out. I tuned up my ATV's, changed the oil and repacked by cargo boxes for spring riding. The only problem is, the foothills keep getting snow. The foothills got nailed with another 13 inches last week, to add to the stuff that was already there. The mountains where I like to ride, have been getting several feet. It might be a bit longer.

The foothills got nailed with another 13 inches last week, to add to the stuff that was already there. The mountains where I like to ride, have been getting several feet. It might be a bit longer.

It was 101* real feel on the sand last weekend in western Oklahoma. I can't actually fathom seeing snow right now.

Well the pioneer is on glorified golf cart duty at the lake for the rest of the summer. It’s been 100 or close to it about 5 times already and I’m not that damn commute lol.

I know this threads pretty slow but I snagged up a new project. A raptor 250 I tried buying months ago. Guy hurt the cam in it. Came with a new jug, piston, valve springs, valves and rockers. Tons of aftermarket parts. Was originally asking 2500. Messaged and asked if I’d be interested in a basket case for 500. He needed to get his wife out of jail lol.

I sold my ATV's a bought a Polaris General. I've been hanging accessories on it all winter. I only have the Thumper Fab rock sliders left to hang, (I'm doing that this week) along with grabbing an extra belt. Everything else is done. Come on warm temps and spring!

Let me get it done and I will.

My brother just picked up a Polaris ranger with the same thing as your Dad's neighbor. It's the Northstar model. Heat/AC/ power glass windows, GPS, ect. He's also hanging a lot of Thumper Fab accessories on it. That's going to be a sweet ride.

Mines nowhere near that fancy. LOL I did add a backup camera, a stereo system, changed out the headlights to bright LED, hung on some extra lights, installed a spare tire holder/fold down rack, a rear aluminum box, front electric windshield wiper and reservoir, front fold out glass, rear glass, etc.

I’ve got a similar set up on the pioneer 1000. Windshield, bumpers, winch, stereo and added nets to keep the kiddos arms inside.

I need to upgrade my music situation while riding, but currently own a Sportsman with a storage bin/second seat setup that I bolted on, so there's little in terms of permanently docking speakers (but could maybe get creative).

I've mostly used a JBL or just earbuds, but need something better.

I know next to nothing about off-roading, but Matt's Offroad Recovery on YouTube is a fascinating watch. It's crazy the situations people get themselves into (and that they're able to get them out). Here's a sample:

I'm in the process of finishing up a 1966 bronco. It'll be a fun wheeler when I'm done.

Super proud of my son. Over 55 miles in two days on his little 250ex. Went everywhere without issue. Cruised through 12k acres of private land at Cucumber creek. The owner and his dad gave us a tour. Two guys killed two 30 packs of trail sodas in a day. 10am-midnight. :BLVD:

Let’s see it! Our fj40 progress has completely stalled. My dads bought several ford high boys. Ones in paint now. Not off roaders but will be used on the property and for recovery on the 500 acres of public next to us if needed.

Here she is. I've got some 32" tires I'll be putting on, a winch, and I do have the top but I will leave it off till summer. She runs, turns, stops, and lights up great.
